Is it just a phase ⛓️‍💥🖤

2025/10/13 Edited to

... Read moreThe phrase "it's just a phase" is something many of us, especially those with unique or alternative styles, have heard countless times. It often comes from well-meaning friends, family, or even strangers, but its impact can be far from harmless. When someone dismisses your evolving taste in fashion, your choice of dark eye makeup, or even that nose piercing you've always wanted, as 'just a phase,' it can feel incredibly invalidating. It suggests that your personal expression isn't genuine, but rather a temporary whim you'll eventually grow out of. But what does "just a phase" truly mean, and why is it so commonly used? For many, it's a way to cope with change they don't understand or are uncomfortable with. Parents might say it out of concern for your future, worrying about how your style choices might affect job prospects or social acceptance. Friends might use it playfully, not realizing the depth of your connection to your aesthetic. Society, too, often struggles with anything outside the perceived norm, quick to label unique expressions as fleeting rebellious acts rather than authentic identity explorations. I remember when I first started experimenting with my look – from styling my dark hair in new ways to embracing a more intense dark eye makeup. The comments started almost immediately. Getting a lip piercing felt like a bold step in expressing myself, yet it was met with the familiar refrain. Even wearing a favorite open-knit top, which felt so 'me' at the time, was deemed temporary. It made me question: was I just trying to fit into a subculture, or was this genuinely part of who I was becoming? The perception that these choices, like adding Hello Kitty elements to my accessories or choosing a delicate light blue heart-shaped pendant, were merely transient made me feel misunderstood. However, a 'phase' isn't inherently a bad thing. Our identities are fluid, constantly evolving as we grow, learn, and experience new things. What might seem like a temporary interest or style choice can actually be a crucial part of self-discovery. Each phase, whether it's a deep dive into an alternative aesthetic or a brief flirtation with a new hobby, contributes to the complex tapestry of who we are. It’s through these explorations that we find what truly resonates with us, what makes us feel most authentic, and what we want to carry forward into the next stage of our lives. So, how do you navigate being told your style is "just a phase"? First, recognize that their perception doesn't define your reality. Your choices, whether permanent or evolving, are valid expressions of yourself. Second, embrace the journey. It's okay if your style changes over time; that's part of life! What matters is that you're expressing yourself genuinely in the present moment. Whether your dark hair, your piercings, or your specific fashion sense becomes a lifelong staple or a cherished memory, each step is a part of your unique story. Ultimately, owning your style and your narrative is the most powerful response to such dismissive labels. Your identity is yours to craft, one authentic phase at a time.
