🤰🏽Mama’s of Color: Advocate for Your Health 📢
This is the letter I provided my birth center the day I was went in to give birth to my son.
The journey of bringing a new life into this world is a precious one, but it’s also essential to be proactive about your health and well-being. For Black women, the statistics are alarming—Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. It’s crucial to take steps to ensure you receive the best possible care.
Here are some important tips to help you advocate for yourself:
🌸 Create a Birth Plan: Having a clear birth plan helps ensure your wishes are known and respected. Outline your preferences for labor, delivery, and postpartum care.
✉️ Write a Letter to Your Labor & Delivery Team: Draft a letter detailing your birth plan and any specific requests. Have this letter uploaded to your medical chart so your care team is fully aware of your desires.
👩🏾⚕️Consider Hiring a Midwife or Doula:** A midwife or doula can provide continuous support, advocate for you, and ensure your voice is heard. Their presence can make a significant difference in your birth experience.
👩🏾⚕️ Request a Diverse Care Team:Don’t hesitate to request that your care team includes Black women or women of color. Having a culturally competent team can enhance your comfort and trust during this critical time.

As a Black mother, advocating for your health during pregnancy is essential. Start by creating a comprehensive birth plan that outlines your wishes and preferences for labor and postpartum care. This proactive approach ensures that your voice is heard and respected at the birth center. In addition, consider documenting your birth plan and sharing it with your labor and delivery team beforehand. Hiring a midwife or doula can also enhance your birthing experience. These professionals provide personalized support, making you feel more secure and comfortable. They can play a crucial role in advocating for your needs, especially if you're unable to voice them during labor. It's also important to ensure that your care team is diverse and culturally competent. By requesting a healthcare team that includes Black women or women of color, you can foster an environment of trust and understanding. Your comfort during this critical time can significantly impact your overall experience and outcomes. Lastly, do not hesitate to seek help when creating your birth plan. Many resources and professionals are available to assist you in communicating your needs effectively. Always remember that your health and that of your baby are paramount, and advocating for yourself is key to achieving the respectful care you deserve. 💖
