MAKING PRUNE PURÉE

I made prune purée for the first time for my baby because she was having some real trouble with constipation and not only did she love it but it worked MIRACLES! She was in some real pain for days and just couldn’t get things moving along so I made this prune purée and gave it to her before bedtime and it worked before I even got her down to sleep and so I actually ended up making more after she went to sleep and gave her more for lunch the next day to finish the job and it worked amazing again so quickly. Now I have extra in the freezer for emergencies haha!

INSTRUCTIONS :

- If you want a quick way to make this purée, boil some water and soak your chosen amount of prunes in the boiling water for 20 minutes (or until soft). If you have some time to prep, soak your prunes in a bowl of warm water and leave for a couple hours.

- Put your prunes in the blender along with some breast milk or water (almost enough to cover them)

- Blend

- All done! Serve, freeze, or refrigerate (just keep in mind how long your breast milk is good for if not frozen)

... Read moreAfter seeing the amazing results of my homemade prune puree for my little one's constipation, I wanted to share even more tips and insights I've gathered. One of the most common questions I get asked, and something I researched a lot myself, is all about *soaking prunes*. Many wonder why it's even necessary, and trust me, it makes a huge difference! Soaking prunes isn't just about making them soft enough to blend; it actually helps to plump them up, making the purée smoother and easier for tiny tummies to digest. It also helps to rehydrate the prunes, which can enhance their natural laxative properties. My preferred method, especially when I'm in a hurry, is the quick soak. Just like the main recipe mentions, pouring boiling water over your pitted prunes and letting them sit for about 20 minutes works wonders. You'll see them transform from shriveled little fruits to plump, juicy gems. If you have more time, a longer soak in warm water for a couple of hours or even overnight in the fridge can further soften them and make for an even smoother purée. I usually use filtered water for soaking, but tap water is perfectly fine too. The key is to ensure they are fully submerged. Now, about the purée itself. Making prune puree at home is incredibly rewarding. Not only do you know exactly what's going into your baby's food, but you can also control the consistency. For younger babies just starting solids, a very smooth, almost liquid purée is best. As they get older and more accustomed to textures, you can leave it a little thicker. I found my Magic Bullet blender worked perfectly for small batches, but any good blender, like a Cuisinart or similar, will do the trick. You just need enough liquid – breast milk, formula, or even the soaking water – to get it moving. Start with less liquid and add more gradually until you reach your desired consistency. Remember those OCR images showing the blend process? They really nail it! Beyond constipation relief, prunes are a fantastic source of fiber, potassium, and vitamins K and B6, making them a really nutritious addition to your baby's diet. I often wondered, how much prune puree baby should I give? My pediatrician suggested starting with just one or two teaspoons a day, especially when introducing it for constipation. You can gradually increase it if needed, but always consult your doctor. I like to serve it plain on a *baby spoon*, or sometimes mix a little into their oatmeal or yogurt for a subtle sweetness and an extra fiber boost. Lastly, let's talk storage. Making a larger batch and freezing portions is a total game-changer for busy moms. I portion mine into ice cube trays, freeze them, and then pop the frozen cubes into a freezer-safe bag. They can last for several months in the freezer. When you need a serving, just thaw a cube or two in the fridge overnight or gently warm it. This way, I always have a 'miracle worker' on hand for those unexpected moments of discomfort. Just be mindful of the shelf life if you're using breast milk in your purée and not freezing it immediately – typically only a few days in the fridge. Being able to serve or freeze saves so much time and stress!
