✨ Homemade Everything bagels I make every week ✨
This will always be a staple in my home and if I can convince you to make 1 thing homemade I will say to make bagels! With this recipe you can also throw the ingredients in a bread machine and use the dough setting to make the dough!
Ingredients:
• 1½ cups warm water (110°F)
• 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
• 4 cups bread flour (plus more for dusting)
• 1½ teaspoons salt
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• everything bagel seasoning for topping
For the boiling water
• Large pot of water
• 2 tablespoons baking soda
Directions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy. Add flour, salt, sugar. Mix until a stiff dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and firm.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 60–90 minutes, or until doubled in size. Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a ball, poke a hole in the center, and gently stretch to form bagels.
- Place shaped bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and baking soda. Boil bagels 30–45 seconds per side, then remove and drain. Top bagels with everything bagel seasoning as soon as you take it out of the water mixture so the seasoning sticks to the bagels
- Place bagels back on baking sheet. Bake for 18–22 minutes until deep golden brown.

Making everything bagels at home is a rewarding experience that allows you to enjoy fresh, customized bagels anytime. One tip I found valuable is using bread flour as it provides a chewy texture that's distinctive to traditional bagels. When mixing the dough, ensure the water temperature is around 110°F to effectively activate the yeast for optimal rise. If you prefer a hands-off approach, using a bread machine on the dough setting is a game-changer—it kneads and rises the dough with minimal effort. After shaping the dough into bagels, boiling them with baking soda in the water is essential to achieve that signature glossy and chewy crust. Make sure not to over-boil; around 30-45 seconds per side is ideal. Immediately after boiling, sprinkle the everything bagel seasoning generously so it adheres well before baking. For a golden-brown finish, baking at 450°F ensures the bagels develop a crunchy crust while staying soft inside. Baking times can vary slightly, so keep an eye on them after 18 minutes. You can also customize the seasoning topping by mixing sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried onion, garlic flakes, and sea salt to match your preferences. Overall, homemade everything bagels are worth the time investment because they bring fresh flavors and customizable options you won't find in store-bought varieties. Plus, making them from scratch can be a fun activity to share with family or friends!
