8 tips to feel safety in your body

2024/11/14 Edited to

... Read moreFinding a sense of safety within your own body after experiencing trauma can feel like an uphill battle. When your nervous system is constantly on high alert, stuck in that ‘fight or flight’ mode, it’s hard to truly relax and feel at peace. But I've learned that with consistent, intentional practices, it is absolutely possible to cultivate that feeling of inner safety. It’s a journey, not a destination, and these tips have been my anchor. One of the most powerful tools I’ve embraced is deep breathing before bed. It sounds simple, but the impact is profound. When we breathe deeply, especially using our diaphragm, we activate the vagus nerve, which signals our body to calm down. Instead of short, shallow breaths that keep us anxious, slow, deliberate breaths tell our nervous system that we are safe. I personally love the 4-7-8 breathing technique: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, and exhale slowly for 8. Doing this for just 5-10 minutes before sleep helps quiet my racing thoughts and prepare my body for rest, making me feel so much more secure heading into the night. Beyond just breathing, there are so many practical ways to cultivate safety. Connecting with nature has been a game-changer for me. Simply stepping outside, feeling the sun on my skin, or listening to the rustle of leaves helps me feel grounded and connected to something larger than myself. It pulls me out of my head and into the present moment, creating a natural sense of peace and belonging that my nervous system craves. Even just tending to a houseplant can offer a mini dose of this connection. Another crucial aspect is strengthening the mind-body connection. This isn't just about relaxation; it's about becoming attuned to what your body is telling you. Practices like gentle yoga, stretching, or even just a mindful body scan can help you notice where you hold tension and gently release it. By listening to your body's signals, you start to feel more in control and less overwhelmed, fostering a deeper sense of internal safety. It’s a process of rebuilding trust with yourself. Releasing stored emotions is also vital. Our bodies can hold onto past experiences, manifesting as physical tension or chronic unease. Journaling, talking to a trusted friend or therapist, or even engaging in gentle movement like shaking or dancing can help unburden your system. Allowing emotions to move through you, rather than suppressing them, is a powerful act of self-care that tells your body it’s safe to feel and process. Finally, don't underestimate the power of physical comfort and intentional relaxation. A weighted blanket has become a non-negotiable for me. The deep pressure stimulation provides a comforting hug, signaling safety and promoting the release of oxytocin, which helps calm the nervous system. Paired with progressive muscle relaxation, where you systematically tense and then relax different muscle groups, it's an incredible duo for releasing physical tension and inviting a deep sense of calm. These tools aren't just luxuries; they're essential components in building a resilient and safe inner world. Remember, every small step towards feeling more grounded is a victory.
