How I manage sensory sensitivity during PMS

PMS doesn’t just hit my mood, it hits my nervous system. Sounds, lights, even the way my clothes feel suddenly becomes way too much. I used to just snap at people or isolate without knowing why.

Now I recognize it’s sensory sensitivity, not just being "overdramatic." Creating a gentler environment during this time has changed everything. I lower my light exposure, avoid overwhelming tasks, and give myself permission to just not be okay with overstimulation. Now I support myself through it all so much better!

... Read moreSensory sensitivity during PMS is a complex and often overlooked symptom that can deeply affect daily functioning and emotional health. As highlighted, heightened sensitivity to sounds, lights, and tactile sensations such as clothing texture can overwhelm the nervous system, leading to irritability and isolation. This is not merely emotional mood swings but a physical overstimulation that requires deliberate management. Recent approaches emphasize the importance of acknowledging sensory overload rather than dismissing it as being "overdramatic." Key strategies include reducing exposure to bright lights and loud noises by using noise-canceling headphones and creating a calming nighttime environment. Wearing soft, loose-fitting clothes can greatly reduce skin irritation and discomfort, which is crucial for those experiencing PMS-related sensory sensitivity. Meal choices should also be simple and soothing, avoiding harsh flavors or textures that may exacerbate discomfort. Importantly, pacing oneself by avoiding overwhelming tasks during this period allows the nervous system to rest and recover. This holistic self-support system—often called a PMS toolkit—enables individuals to manage symptoms effectively rather than push through the distress. Understanding that sensory sensitivity during PMS is rooted in an overstimulated nervous system is key to improving quality of life during this time. Incorporating these sensory-friendly adjustments creates a gentler environment that supports well-being, helping to navigate PMS with greater ease and compassion for oneself. Supporting research increasingly recognizes the value of sensory management to reduce emotional and physical strain associated with PMS and PMDD.
