Premed Extracurricular activities

2024/1/30 Edited to

... Read moreHey future doctors! Navigating the world of premed extracurriculars can feel like a maze, right? I've been there, stressing over what activities truly matter. Beyond the basic clinical and research experiences, there's so much more you can do to strengthen your application and show medical schools who you really are. If you're still in high school, it's never too early to start! Don't feel pressured to have everything figured out. Focus on exploring your interests. Local volunteering, joining science or health clubs, or even seeking out a few hours of Physician Shadowing with a family doctor can be great starting points. It's about showing commitment and developing an early interest, not racking up thousands of hours just yet. Summers are golden opportunities for premeds. Instead of just chilling, think strategically. Consider summer research programs – they're highly valued! Or dedicate a block of time to intensive volunteering or clinical experience. Even a unique summer job, if it teaches you valuable skills like leadership or communication, can be spun positively. Remember, quality over quantity when it comes to time spent. And let's talk about 'unique' activities. Med schools aren't just looking for robots who only study science. Your hobbies and 'Artistic Endeavors' (like playing an instrument, painting, or writing) can be incredibly powerful. They demonstrate dedication, discipline, creativity, and a well-rounded personality – all qualities of a great doctor. Don't forget to include these! I even used my passion for a non-science activity to show my softer skills and how I de-stress, which is important for resilience in medicine. When it comes to the AMCAS Work and Activities section, don't underestimate the 'Most Meaningful' experiences. You get extra character space for a reason! This is your chance to reflect deeply on how an experience shaped you, what you learned, and why it's relevant to your journey in medicine. It's not just about what you did, but how it changed your perspective or developed a key skill. Choose experiences where you had significant personal growth or made a tangible impact. Another common question is about 'Anticipated' experiences. Yes, you can include activities you plan to continue or start after submitting your AMCAS application! This is super helpful, especially for gap year plans or ongoing projects. Just make sure to clearly state the 'Start Date' and 'End Date' (even if estimated) and 'Completed Hours'. It shows initiative and that you're continually working towards your goals, even beyond your application submission. Finally, Physician Shadowing. It's crucial, but don't just passively observe. Ask thoughtful questions (when appropriate!), reflect on the doctor-patient interactions, and think about the challenges and rewards of the profession. Even a few hours of well-reflected shadowing can be more impactful than hundreds of hours of unengaged observation. Make every experience count!

What to do to apply to medical school 👩🏻‍⚕️
To apply to medical school, complete college, 4 years,, ideally in a science-related field, although other majors work as long as you take pre-med prerequisites. Focus on maintaining a strong GPA, particularly in science courses. Take the MCAT, a standardized test, and aim for a competitive score.
