what they don’t tell you about breastfeeding

hello ◡̈

When I began breastfeeding I felt like I didn’t know anything. I became overwhelmed with it and I definitely chop it down to the fact that I wasn’t well educated on any of it. Breastfeeding is almost this weird taboo thing, much less now than it used to be, but I feel like it’s just not talked about enough.

❣️There’s no 1 size fits all when it comes to breastfeeding! The latch position they show you in the hospital isn’t the only way. If one isn’t working for you and baby, try another way! Cradle hold, football hold, crossbody hold, side lying, etc.

❣️Once solids are introduced, you should always feed baby breast milk before solids. Solids are more for introducing new flavors and textures before the age of 1. Where as breast milk is the main source of nutrition.

❣️Your boobs might leak when you hear another baby cry! This is normal and just how the woman’s body works!

❣️Breastfeeding in public is really strange at first. Once you have done it a few times, it’s not so weird. You’ll stop caring what others think when it comes necessary to feed your baby in public.

❣️Breastfeeding will hurt — but it’s shouldn’t always hurt. In fact if it continues to hurt after a couple of months, I’d see a lactation specialist. Your baby could have a tongue/lip tie.

❣️Waking up in a pool of your own milk after your baby gives you a good stretch of sleep is actually hilarious. I’d take the extra sleep — but remember breastmilk production is supply and demand so you might need to wake up and pump if baby is often giving you long stretches at night.

Breastfeeding is a such a roller coaster. Always remember that breastfeeding is an accomplishment no matter how long you do it.

Keep pushing mama ❤️ You’ve got this! ❤️

... Read moreBreastfeeding often comes with a wealth of unshared experiences and taboos. First-time mothers may find themselves overwhelmed by a lack of information. The importance of finding a comfortable position cannot be overstated; whether it's cradle, football, or side-lying, every mother-baby duo may have their unique preference. It's essential to understand that introducing solids doesn't mean weaning off breast milk. For the first year, breast milk remains a vital source of nutrition, while solids should focus on flavors and textures. Mothers may also experience physiological responses, such as leaking milk at the sound of a baby crying—a normal response linked to hormonal changes during breastfeeding. Although breastfeeding in public may initially feel awkward, many moms find the courage to breastfeed openly with time and experience. If pain persists beyond initial adjustments, consulting a lactation specialist is advisable, as issues like tongue tie could be the culprit. Additionally, the realities of nighttime feedings and their impact on sleep should be acknowledged. Understanding that milk production operates on a supply-and-demand basis may necessitate nighttime pumping sessions if a baby sleeps longer than usual. Ultimately, breastfeeding is a unique journey filled with milestones and challenges. Each mom should feel celebrated, regardless of duration or method, as every effort contributes to a healthy start for the baby. Keep pushing forward, knowing you're not alone in this adventure!
