Sourdough Day 2
Let's feed this little baby! Discard (take out) 50% of starter (I didnât, oops!) and added 1/2 cup of flour & just under 1/2 cup room temperature filtered water. Cover back up lightly, marked it and will repeat tomorrow!
Feeding your sourdough starter is a crucial step in developing a healthy and active culture for baking. On day two, it's common practice to discard about half of your starter before adding fresh flour and water. This helps maintain a balanced environment, prevents the starter from becoming too acidic, and encourages yeast and beneficial bacteria growth. Using room temperature filtered water ensures no chlorine or other chemicals inhibit fermentation. Stirring well after feeding aerates the mixture, promoting active fermentation. Cover your jar loosely to allow air circulation while protecting it from contaminants. Make sure to mark your container with the date or a level indicator to track the starterâs growth over time. Feeding at consistent times each day keeps your culture stable and predictable. If you forget to discard part of your starter before feeding, it's not a disaster, but it can lead to a very large and potentially less active starter that may need adjustments later. Engaging with communities such as #sourdough, #sourdoughbread, and #sourdoughclub on social platforms can provide support, tips, and inspiration throughout your sourdough journey. Remember, every starter is unique and behaves slightly differently, so patience and observation are key to success.
