... Read moreStarting my residency has been an eye-opening experience filled with a mix of excitement and fatigue. Although I’ve officially been a doctor for just over a month, the transition from medical student to resident is intense. One of the biggest challenges is overcoming the feeling described as being a "baby doctor"—having real responsibilities, such as guiding patients and making critical decisions, yet still feeling inexperienced. This paradox of authority versus self-doubt is common among new residents. You have to confidently tell patients and even peers what to do, though inside you might feel uncertain or overwhelmed. Managing these emotions while maintaining professionalism can be exhausting but is essential for growth. Another significant aspect is the physical and mental toll. Long shifts, sleep deprivation, and high-pressure situations can lead to stress and burnout if not managed properly. Establishing coping mechanisms like regular exercise, connecting with support systems, and mindful breaks are invaluable. Residency is also a humbling period where learning continues beyond textbooks. Every patient encounter is an opportunity to gain practical knowledge. Despite the tiredness, there’s a deep sense of fulfillment in knowing the role you play in patient care. For those entering a residency, it’s important to recognize that feeling stressed or exhausted is normal and that support networks, whether peers or mentors, are vital. Embracing the journey with its ups and downs is the key to professional and personal development during this formative time.

You’ve been tired for way too long. Your joints hurt. You feel off. You’ve gone to the doctor… and left with no real answers. Here’s the thing: Lupus can be sneaky. It mimics other conditions and hides behind vague symptoms. And many people (especially women) go years without a diagnosis.
