What no one told me about breastfeeding

1) That it shouldn’t take your baby too long to feed, I had to do so much research to get my daughter checked for a lip tie. She ended up having laser surgery for a tongue, lip and cheek ties at 6 weeks old. I was incredibly lucky and stubborn to feed her through the pain.

2) Breastfeeding doesn’t always come naturally.

3) Breastfeeding may create an amazing bond for you and your child, but it can also be incredibly taxing. It makes me feel incredibly touched out at times.

4) Breastfeeding shouldn’t consume you. I would spend days at a time doing everything I could to build my supply, maintain it, count every ounce meticulously. I don’t eat the same amount of food every day, neither does my baby.

5) Some mom groups make formula sound like a dirty word. I’ve been supplementing with formula for the past few months. It’s helped my mental health to not stress about how much I’ve pumped every day at work.

... Read moreMy journey into early motherhood, particularly with breastfeeding, brought so many surprises. Beyond the immediate joy of holding my baby, I quickly learned that the 'perfect' feeding experience often seen in media wasn't my reality. I wanted to share more insights, especially since many new mothers might feel alone in these struggles. First, let's talk more about those ties. When my little one struggled to feed, I initially blamed myself. But after researching, I discovered the possibility of a lip or tongue tie. These aren't always obvious, but they can significantly impact latch, cause pain for mom, and lead to poor weight gain for baby. Look out for symptoms like a shallow latch, clicking sounds during feeding, nipple pain, or a baby who's constantly hungry. Trust your gut if feeding feels 'off.' Seeking help from a lactation consultant or pediatric dentist who specializes in ties can be life-changing. Laser surgery, as I experienced, might sound scary, but for us, it made a huge difference. It truly helped turn our painful, intimate feeding scenes into more peaceful moments. Then there's the emotional side. The article touched on feeling 'touched out,' and honestly, it's a huge, unspoken part of breastfeeding. It's hard to explain, but it's that overwhelming feeling of being constantly needed, physically drained, and sometimes, just wanting space. This isn't a sign you don't love your baby! It's a common response to the intensity of early motherhood. To cope, I tried to reclaim small moments for myself – a quick shower, a walk, or even just asking my partner to hold the baby while I had a cup of tea. Setting boundaries, even with your baby, is vital for your mental well-being. And supply! Oh, the obsession with supply. It's so easy to get caught up in counting ounces, worrying if your baby is getting enough, or comparing yourself to others. I learned that supply often regulates itself, and fluctuating amounts are normal. Instead of constantly pumping or power-pumping, focus on your baby's cues and wet/dirty diapers. If you're genuinely concerned, a lactation consultant can help you assess if there's a true low supply issue, rather than just anxieties. Remember, your body is doing an amazing job. Finally, formula supplementation. This was a game-changer for my mental health, and I wish more moms felt empowered to consider it without guilt. Society often puts immense pressure on mothers to exclusively breastfeed, making formula seem like a failure. But supplementing allowed me to get a break, share feeding duties, and reduce my stress levels dramatically. A happy, well-rested mother is better for the baby than an exhausted, stressed one. It meant I could truly enjoy that intimate connection with my baby, rather than dreading every feed. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for making choices that support your family's overall well-being. Every drop counts, and fed is best.

My baby took a couple weeks to get the right latch and she’s fine. All babies are different and learn at different rates.but prob should check out the tie tongue just in case if it’s taking to long and there’s other signs of it.
