I’m all about balance. With my diet, with exercise it’s important to find balance so that you don’t burn out or give up. So when my fiancé asked me today “Do you want Dairy Queen” I said “Yes!”
At first I said “No.” I really did want Dairy Queen but my brain was hard set in “this wasn’t the plant for today, we have to stick to the plan” I’m glad that I did make the choice to get Diary Queen. It was very tasty, and guess what I didn’t ruin my diet either!
... Read moreFinding balance in your fitness journey, especially when you're in a calorie deficit, can feel like walking a tightrope. One minute you're crushing your goals, the next, a spontaneous craving hits you like a ton of bricks! Just like my recent experience with a surprise Dairy Queen Blizzard, it’s a moment we all face: do I stick to the rigid plan, or do I enjoy the treat?
I used to be so hard on myself. Any deviation from my meticulously planned meals felt like a failure, leading to a cycle of guilt and often, giving up entirely. But what I've learned, and what I want to share with you, is that allowing yourself an 'unplanned treat' can actually be a powerful tool for sustainable weight loss and a healthier relationship with food.
Think about it: if you constantly deny yourself the foods you love, you're setting yourself up for intense cravings and potential binges down the line. That's why when my fiancé asked if I wanted Dairy Queen, even though my brain initially screamed, 'This wasn't the plan!', I decided to say yes. And guess what? It was so good! Enjoying that delicious Oreo Fudge Brownie Blizzard (which, by the way, was around 460 calories – good to know for tracking!) didn't ruin my diet. It actually boosted my morale and made me feel like my diet was something I could live with, not just endure.
So, how do you fit in those sweet treats without derailing your progress? Here are a few strategies I've found incredibly helpful:
Adjust and Adapt: If you know you're going to have a higher-calorie treat, you can proactively adjust your other meals that day. Maybe I'll have a lighter breakfast or skip a snack. It's not about punishing yourself, but about making conscious choices to accommodate the extra calories.
Portion Control is Key: With something like a Dairy Queen Blizzard, you can often choose smaller sizes. Even a regular size can be shared or enjoyed over two sittings if you’re mindful. Knowing the calorie count, like the 460 calories for my Blizzard, helps you make informed decisions.
Mindful Enjoyment: This is crucial. Don't just wolf it down. Savor every spoonful. Taste the richness, enjoy the texture. When you eat mindfully, you're more satisfied with less, and you truly appreciate the special treat. This helps combat the feeling of "it feels like a lot" because you're fully experiencing it.
It's About the Big Picture: One meal, one treat, one day does not define your entire journey. Your body doesn't operate on a 24-hour reset button. It's the consistent choices over weeks and months that matter. Don't let a single treat turn into a week of unhealthy eating due to guilt.
Reframe Your Mindset: Instead of thinking, 'I didn't plan for this, I've ruined everything,' try, 'This is a special treat, and I earned it. I'm allowed one sweet treat a day (or week, depending on your goals), and I'll get back on track with my next meal.' This positive self-talk is incredibly powerful.
Remember, a sustainable lifestyle change is about balance, not perfection. Allowing yourself to enjoy the foods you love, even during a calorie deficit, is vital for long-term success and mental well-being. My Dairy Queen experience taught me that it’s okay to deviate from the plan sometimes, as long as you return to your healthy habits afterwards. Embrace the flexibility, enjoy your treats, and keep moving forward!
I get so frustrated though, I don’t want to be close to going over my daily goal. My daily calorie intake is over 1,700 since I exercise so I want to be at like 1500-1600 calories but I want a sweet treat every now and then 😭
Dont feel guilty about getting a sweet treats it’s ok to get them once in a while 🥰
