Leafy greens like lettuce, cilantro, parsley, dill, and green onions benefit from being kept fresh by placing their stems in a vase with water, similar to cut flowers. Covering them loosely with a plastic bag can help maintain humidity without trapping excess moisture, which could cause rot. For chopped lettuce or berries such as strawberries and blueberries, it is best to keep them dry by wrapping them in a paper towel inside a container to absorb excess moisture. Root vegetables, including carrots, celery, radishes, and cucumbers, keep well when submerged in water. This method helps them retain moisture and crispness. It's important to refresh the water periodically to avoid bacterial growth. Certain produce like onions and garlic should be stored in a cool, dry place away from each other to prevent sprouting and spoilage. Avoid storing onions with potatoes or other root vegetables like ginger and turmeric, as gases emitted from onions can cause potatoes to sprout prematurely or decay. Before storing any fruits or vegetables, thorough washing is recommended, ideally with a splash of vinegar mixed with water to help eliminate bacteria and pesticide residues.
