5 Ways To Find Yourself After Abuse

After an abusive relationship, you’ve often been so twisted around someone else’s needs, moods, and manipulation that you lose touch with your identity. Here are 5 powerful things you can do to begin finding yourself again:

1. Reconnect with Your Inner Voice

How: Start journaling daily—even if it’s just a few lines. Ask yourself: What do I feel? What do I need? What do I want?

Why: Abuse trains you to ignore your own thoughts and feelings. Journaling helps you rebuild that inner connection and validate your own experience.

2. Create a “Me” Space

How: Designate a space (a corner, a journal, a playlist, a room) that is 100% for you and reflects your personality.

Why: When your world revolved around someone else, having your own sacred space reminds you: I matter. I get to exist outside of them.

3. Reclaim Your Interests

How: Think back—what did you love doing before the relationship? Music? Art? Cooking? Dancing? Try one small thing, no pressure.

Why: Abusers often isolate you or make you feel guilty for enjoying things. Reconnecting with joy reignites your sense of identity.

4. Practice Saying No Without Explaining

How: Try saying no to something small—without over-apologizing or justifying it.

Why: Boundaries are key to self-respect. Learning that you are allowed to take up space and have limits is a huge step in reclaiming your sense of self.

5. Surround Yourself with Safe People

How: Seek out support—whether it’s a therapist, a support group, a trusted friend, or an online community of survivors.

Why: You need mirrors that reflect your worth, not distort it. Being around safe, validating people helps you rebuild confidence and trust in your own reality.
