High masking ADHD signs in women

When I think of high masking ADHD, my mom is the first person who comes to mind. Although she doesn’t acknowledge that she is neurodivergent, she has all the classic signs of ADHD in women: she pours everything into her career, her peers see her as being successful and having it together, and she is liked by everyone she knows.

Thinking about high masking ADHD, who comes to mind for you?

... Read moreIt's so easy to look at someone like my mom – or maybe even yourself – and think, 'Wow, they really have it all together!' The woman who’s thriving in her career, always seems to be on a growth and accomplishment mindset, has many friends, and is generally well liked often embodies the classic image of success. But beneath that polished exterior can lie a lifetime of high masking ADHD. For women especially, the pressure to conform, to be 'good girls,' and to manage household responsibilities often translates into an intense effort to hide their ADHD traits. I’ve learned that the signs of high masking ADHD in women aren't always what you’d expect. Beyond just appearing successful, look for these subtle indicators. Does she meticulously plan everything, often over-preparing to avoid mistakes, even if it causes immense stress? This isn't just ambition; it can be an overcompensation strategy. Is she a chronic people-pleaser, constantly adjusting her behavior to fit in, fearing rejection or judgment if her authentic self shows through? Many women with masked ADHD become experts at mirroring others, leading to a deep sense of inauthenticity and exhaustion. Another common sign is an internal world of chaos contrasting with an outwardly calm demeanor. She might appear to 'have it all together' at work, but her home life could be a struggle, or she might spend hours re-organizing thoughts and tasks behind the scenes. This constant effort to maintain an image can lead to chronic fatigue, anxiety, and even depression. The drive for career advancement and achievement, which is often praised, can also be a form of masking. It’s a way to channel hyperfocus and avoid introspection about underlying struggles. If you find yourself constantly striving for perfection, burning out easily, or feeling like an imposter despite external validation, these could be your own signs of high masking ADHD. It’s like living a double life – one where you’re seen as competent and successful, and another where you’re battling internal disorganization, emotional dysregulation, and intense mental fatigue. Recognizing these signs isn't about finding fault, but about understanding. If you resonate with these experiences, it might be a call to explore further. Self-compassion is key. Start by allowing yourself to acknowledge the immense effort you've put into masking. Consider seeking out a neurodiversity-affirming therapist or doctor who understands ADHD in adult women. Unmasking isn't about letting go of your strengths, but about finding healthier ways to manage your challenges and embrace your authentic self, leading to more sustainable well-being and genuine connection.
