3 things your neurodivergent kids need to hear

I was surprised I began crying as I made this post… It’s probably because I heard a lot of negative messaging as a child. What I did was never good enough, I always felt out of place, and I often wondered what made me so different, and why things were so hard.

I am not a big fan of the phrase “try your best” because your best is different person to person, and also, autistic folks tend to take this literally. Then they do their best and end up burnt out… But I absolutely try my very, very best when it comes to making my kids feel heard and seen every day.

After you hear the same awful things over and over again, from parents and from peers, you start to believe they are true. And then you often end up with children, and then adults who have serious mental health issues and negative self view.

What do you wish you heard more as a child growing up?

... Read morePositive affirmation plays a crucial role in the emotional well-being of neurodivergent children, including those on the autism spectrum. These children benefit immensely from receiving messages that reinforce their self-worth and individuality. For instance, telling them that 'it's okay to be different' empowers them to embrace their unique interests and talents, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance. Moreover, reiterating that 'you tried, and that will always be good enough' helps alleviate the pressure to constantly perform at their highest level, which can lead to burnout. Recognizing their efforts instead of comparing them to others is vital for fostering resilience. It's also important to validate their feelings by saying 'it's okay that this feels harder for you than other kids; your worth isn't defined by this.' This not only acknowledges their challenges but also reassures them that their struggles do not define their value as a person. Parents and caregivers can facilitate positive reinforcement by incorporating these messages into daily interactions, underscoring the importance of nurturing a supportive environment that prioritizes mental health and emotional acceptance. In addition to these affirmations, understanding the unique ways neurodivergent individuals perceive the world can enhance communication and connection. Engaging in open conversations about their experiences and feelings can further empower them and help reduce feelings of isolation. By fostering a home that champions acceptance and understanding, we equip neurodivergent children with the tools they need to thrive emotionally and socially. Emphasizing positivity and support is essential for their growth, ensuring that they feel loved and valued just as they are.
