Bunion Surgery

December 16, 2024 I had bunion surgery on my left foot. Dr Adams located at Baptist Health Paducah KY did an amazing job!

Day 1 had no pain at all because of nerve blockers

Day 2 burning sensation in my two toes as the nerve blocked was wearing off, I also got the 1st look at some of the stitches

Day 3 more pain and can feel all the stitches as my foot moves.

Day 4 (today) bruises and still big toe is numb

Go Monday (day 6) for post op appointment and I’ll get more pictures! Mercy Health - Lourdes Hospital Baptist Health Paducah #footsurgeryrecovery #bunion #kentucky @

... Read moreDeciding to have bunion surgery was a big step for me, and I know many of you might be wondering what it's really like. Before my procedure at Baptist Health Paducah, I spent a lot of time researching and asking my doctor questions. I wanted to understand everything, from the type of surgery to the expected recovery. If you're considering it, I highly recommend discussing all your options, including lifestyle changes, physical therapy, and different surgical techniques, to ensure it's the right path for you. My first few days post-op were a blur of emotions and sensations. The nerve block was truly a lifesaver on Day 1 – I didn't feel a thing! But as it started to wear off on Day 2, that's when the real work began. I remember the burning sensation in my toes, and seeing those first stitches peek out from under the bandage was quite a sight. My foot was definitely swollen, and there was a bit of blue glitter nail polish that I hadn't had time to remove completely before surgery, which added a touch of unexpected color to the whole situation! By Day 3, the pain became more noticeable, especially as I tried to gently move my foot. It wasn't unbearable, but it was a constant reminder of the surgery. The itching started around the incision site, which is a common part of healing, but still annoying! Getting comfortable for sleep was a challenge, and I relied heavily on pillows to elevate my foot. On Day 4, the bruising really came out. My foot looked quite colorful, and the big toe remained stubbornly numb, which my doctor said was normal. It’s wild to see how quickly your body reacts and starts the healing process. Speaking of visuals, the 'before' picture of my prominent bunion really shows how much I needed this. Seeing the progress, even with the swelling and stitches, makes me hopeful for the final outcome. For anyone going through this, here are some tips I found helpful: Pain Management: Stay ahead of the pain. Don't wait for it to get severe before taking medication. Keep your prescriptions filled and follow your doctor's instructions. Elevation: Keep your foot elevated above your heart as much as possible to reduce swelling. This is key! Ice: Ask your doctor if and when you can apply ice. It can really help with swelling and discomfort. Mobility: Even if you're non-weight bearing, try to move your toes gently (if allowed) to encourage circulation and prevent stiffness. Crutches became my new best friends, though getting around was still tricky. Home Setup: Prepare your home beforehand. Set up a comfortable recovery station with everything you need within reach – water, snacks, books, remote, phone charger. Shower chairs and grabbers are also super useful. Patience: Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be good days and challenging days. Be kind to yourself and celebrate small victories. I'm looking forward to my post-op appointment on Day 6 to get more pictures and an update on my healing. Recovery is a journey, and I’m taking it one day at a time!
