what i put in my freezer stash over a week postpartum! 🍼

as a second time mom, i knew what i was doing this time with breastfeeding and wanted to build my supply up fast.

i’ve been pumping every 3-4 hours using my medela handpump for ~15 minutes. i’m also feeding my newborn from my breast 1-2 times a day, and still pumping (if it’s time) right after as well. basically if my breasts are full, he’ll eat from me but if i just pumped, ill bottle feed him from the pitcher in the fridge.

this pic is from 5 pump sessions today!

... Read moreAs a second-time mom, I found that having a structured pumping routine was key to building my freezer stash quickly in the first week postpartum. One thing that really helped me was sticking to a roughly 3 to 4-hour pumping schedule, pumping for about 15 minutes each session. I used a Medela handpump, which was portable and easy to clean, making it convenient during those busy days of caring for a newborn. This frequency not only helped maintain my milk supply but also gradually increased it, which is important especially if you want to create a supply surplus. Feeding my baby directly from the breast 1-2 times a day also contributed to regulating my supply. When my breasts felt full, feeding directly helped relieve pressure and kept the milk flowing, while pumping after those feeds helped capture any extra milk and encouraged even more production. Storing milk in the fridge first before transferring to the freezer was part of my process, so I could bottle feed my baby with freshly pumped milk if I had pumped immediately before feeding. This method gave me the flexibility to both breastfeed and provide pumped milk as needed. From my experience, I recommend keeping track of how much milk you pump each session and gradually building up your stash. Early on, I could pump amounts ranging anywhere between 50 ml to 150 ml per session, depending on the time of day and how my body was responding. Consistency was crucial to achieving this oversupply. Lastly, connecting with other breastfeeding moms and pumping communities helped me stay motivated and gain practical insights. Sharing this journey with others going through similar experiences made challenges feel less overwhelming. Overall, patience and persistence paired with a structured pumping routine can help any mom build a robust freezer stash for her little one’s needs.
