To annotate or not to annotate?

I recently started annotating and highlighting with Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows both by Sarah J Maas (next is the tandem read for Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn) and idk how to feel about it. I like it because I’m able to slow down and focus on the book. Buttt I also feel like I’m not getting attached to the books.

Let me know your thoughts!!

... Read moreFollowing up on my last post about annotating, I’ve seen so many of you wondering the same thing: is it truly worth it? I totally get it – it feels like a big step from just quietly reading! Let me dive a bit deeper into what I’ve learned and why I think it’s worth exploring. For those who are still asking, 'what does annotating a book mean?', it's essentially interacting with your book beyond just reading the words. It's not just highlighting random sentences; it's a way to mark your thoughts, emotions, and important plot points directly onto the pages. This can range from underlining significant phrases, writing small notes in the margins, using sticky tabs to mark key passages, or even creating a color-coded key. For example, I’ve been experimenting with a system for my copy of "Empire of Storms" where different colors signify ‘Sad’ moments, ‘Happy’ scenes, ‘Spicy’ sections, ‘Fave quotes,’ or ‘Epic’ plot twists. Seeing those multiple highlighted lines across the pages really makes the story come alive visually and helps me remember details later! So, does annotating actually help? In my personal experience, absolutely. One of the biggest benefits of annotating books is how it forces me to slow down and truly absorb what I’m reading. Instead of just passively consuming the story, I’m actively engaging with it. This has definitely deepened my understanding of complex character arcs and intricate plots, especially in the Sarah J. Maas series I’m currently tackling. Many bookworms find that it significantly enhances memory and recall, making future discussions about the book so much richer. It’s like having a silent conversation with the author and yourself, leaving a trail of your journey through the text with colorful pens and highlighters. If you’re still on the fence thinking, 'should I annotate my books?', remember there’s no single right way to do it! You can start super simple, maybe just with a pencil to underline impactful sentences or jot down a quick thought. As you get more comfortable, you might introduce different colors, like my color-coded key. Don’t feel pressured to highlight every single line or write a full essay in the margins. Just focus on what resonates with *you*. Maybe you want to track a particular character's development, analyze themes, or just mark beautiful prose that moves you. I’ve found that even focusing on sections with a hand holding open a book, revealing only some highlighted sections, is a great start. Now, about that feeling of being ‘detached’ that I mentioned earlier – it's a real concern! Sometimes, I worry that focusing too much on the act of annotating pulls me out of the immersive reading experience. My solution has been to find a balance. I often let myself get completely lost in the story for a chapter or two, then go back to annotate. Or, I save extensive annotation for a re-read. It’s a learning curve, and what works for one book or series might not work for another. The goal is to enhance your connection, not diminish it. So, 'is annotating books worth it'? For me, the answer is increasingly yes. It transforms a book into a personalized treasure, a tangible record of my journey through its pages. It’s absolutely okay to annotate books, and it’s even more okay to experiment to find your own unique style. Give it a try, even with just a simple pen, and see how it changes your reading experience!
