The Thursday Murder Club: Book vs. Movie 🔍📚🎬

The movie keeps the charm, friendship, and murder mystery, but it loses some of what makes the book work so well.

Joyce’s diary is gone, we spend less time inside each character’s head, and the layered mystery gets compressed into something much cleaner. The ending also changes to fit the movie’s faster pace.

My verdict: the book wins for character voice, but the movie wins for casting.

Have you read the book, watched the movie, or done both?

... Read moreHaving read Richard Osman's "The Thursday Murder Club" and seen its film adaptation, I noticed some striking differences that influenced my enjoyment of each. The book deeply immerses you in each character’s mindset, giving you access to their thoughts and the subtle nuances of Joyce’s diary, which is a significant storytelling device. This layer of interiority made the mystery feel richly textured and more unpredictable. In contrast, the movie streamlines the plot, compressing the complex, layered mystery into a cleaner, faster-paced narrative. While this helps the film keep momentum and be more accessible to viewers unfamiliar with the book, it does reduce the depth of the investigation and the quirky personalities of the characters. Some scenes where Joyce’s diary would have added to the suspense or humor simply vanish. However, the movie truly shines in its casting. The actors chosen bring charisma and charm that visually capture the spirit of the Thursday Murder Club, appealing to audiences who appreciate a strong ensemble. The chemistry among the cast creates an engaging dynamic that makes the movie enjoyable in its own right, even if the internal character insights are lessened. For fans of the book, the simpler ending in the movie might feel rushed, but it fits the cinematic need for closure and pace. Personally, I appreciate both formats: the book for its rich voice and character depth, and the movie for its lively performances and accessible storytelling. If you're debating which to experience first, consider whether you want the full psychological depth or a quicker, visually engaging version of this clever, cozy mystery. Both offer entertainment but highlight different strengths of storytelling.
