Easy Overnight French Press Cold Brew ☕️✨

This recipe has made life so easy, I just had to share for the @Lemon8 Food coffee recipe challenge.

While I’ve myself weened off my coffee addiction a bit, I’ve also been trying to ween my fiancé off the diet cokes and switch over to coffee. With a distaste for hot drinks, I decided to give cold brew a try in my new French press.

What a hit! It’s so easy to make the day before which takes one more step out of a hectic pre-work morning routine, and it tastes delicious!

Ingredients

☕️ Ground coffee of choice

💧 Cold water

✨ Container of some sort that allows you to filter out the grounds in the morning (Id imagine you can get creative with a coffee filter if you don’t have something like a French press!)

1. While I noted the obligatory need to take a whiff of the coffee bag once opened, you can start with 2 heaping tbsps of coffee. Hot coffee in my French press asks for 6, but I discovered that is wayyyyyy to much and basically makes gasoline level cold brew. Feel free to add more to your hearts content, but 2 gave me the best flavor 🤷🏼‍♀️

2. Fill to the fill line on press with cold water, I’d imagine it’s about 2-3 cups worth of liquid if not using a press.

3. Let sit overnight in fridge without pressing lid down.

4. In the morning, press & enjoy!

It's all about the cold water extraction, which pulls out fewer bitter acids and oils compared to hot brewing, resulting in a naturally sweeter and less acidic cup that's easier on the stomach. One key thing I discovered is that the type of ground coffee beans you use makes a huge difference, especially for your French press. You really want a coarse grind—think sea salt or breadcrumbs. Too fine, and you'll end up with a cloudy, silty mess that's hard to press and can taste over-extracted or even bitter. I learned this the hard way with some pre-ground coffee that was just too fine! So, specifically seeking out 'ground coffee beans for French press' or grinding them coarsely yourself is a crucial step for that perfect overnight French press cold brew. While the original recipe gives a great starting point with 2 heaping tablespoons, perfecting your coffee-to-water ratio is personal. A common recommendation for a strong concentrate is a 1:4 ratio (one part coffee grounds to four parts cold water by weight). For a ready-to-drink brew, you might aim for 1:8 or 1:10. My '2 heaping tablespoons' usually works out to about 30-40 grams of coffee, and with roughly 2-3 cups (480-720ml) of water, it's roughly in that 1:12 to 1:18 range for a milder, ready-to-drink strength. Don't be afraid to experiment to find your perfect 'French press cold brew overnight' strength – it’s all about what tastes best to you! Speaking of overnight, while 12 hours is a fantastic minimum, I sometimes let my French press cold brew steep for up to 18 hours for an even bolder flavor. Just make sure to keep it in the refrigerator! Once pressed, I store my cold brew concentrate in an airtight jar in the refrigerator, and it stays fresh for up to 7-10 days. This means I can prep a big batch on Sunday and have easy coffee all week long, truly simplifying my morning routine. And how do I enjoy it? My go-to is pouring it over ice with a generous splash of oat milk. Sometimes, I'll add a pump of vanilla syrup for a little treat. You can also dilute it with more cold water if it's too strong for your liking, or even warm it up gently for a less acidic 'hot' coffee experience. It’s so versatile and makes this an 'easy coffee recipe' that I can't imagine going back to fiddling with drip coffee makers every morning.
