Gospel for today Matthew 21:23-27
Gospel for today according to Matthew
Matthew 21:23-27
When Jesus had come into the temple area,
the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him
as he was teaching and said,
"By what authority are you doing these things?
And who gave you this authority?"
Jesus said to them in reply,
"I shall ask you one question, and if you answer it for me,
then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things.
Where was John's baptism from?
Was it of heavenly or of human origin?"
They discussed this among themselves and said,
"If we say 'Of heavenly origin,' he will say to us,
'Then why did you not believe him?'
But if we say, 'Of human origin,' we fear the crowd,
for they all regard John as a prophet."
So they said to Jesus in reply, "We do not know."
He himself said to them,
"Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things."

In Matthew 21:23-27, Jesus faces the religious leaders questioning His authority to teach and act in the temple. This passage highlights a profound moment of spiritual authority and the challenge of recognizing divine truth. By asking about the origin of John the Baptist's baptism—whether it was heavenly or human—Jesus exposed the leaders' hesitation and fear of public opinion. The chief priests and elders were caught in a dilemma because John was widely regarded as a prophet, yet they refused to accept his message, revealing their spiritual blindness and resistance to God’s work. This interaction invites readers to reflect on the importance of recognizing and embracing divine authority in their own lives. Jesus' refusal to reveal His authority to those unwilling to accept the truth underscores the value of faith and openness. It also serves as a warning against hypocrisy and the limitations of human judgment when disconnected from God’s direction. During the Advent season, this passage encourages believers to prepare their hearts by questioning their own openness to divine guidance and authority. Just as the temple served as a center of spiritual teaching, believers are called to examine the foundation of their faith and ensure it is rooted in heavenly truth rather than human opinion. The mention of John’s baptism serves as a reminder of the prophetic voice calling people to repentance and renewal in anticipation of Christ’s coming. This Gospel reading challenges us to consider how we respond to God’s messages: Do we accept them with faith, or do we doubt and resist out of fear or pride? It also emphasizes the importance of humility in spiritual leadership and the necessity of aligning ourselves with God’s authority rather than relying solely on human traditions or societal pressures. Furthermore, the phrase “HOLY BIBLE,” prominent in the article’s image OCR, symbolizes the timeless source of divine wisdom and authority from which we are invited to draw guidance. Engaging with scripture during daily readings strengthens our understanding and connection with God's plan. This passage invites personal reflection on where our spiritual authority comes from and how we can live authentically under God’s guidance every day.
