I Forget EVERYTHING because of ADHD

I forget everything because of my ADHD. Before my diagnosis and understanding how my brain works, I just thought I was a mess. I thought that was just who I was. I kind of thought I just sucked at life. I know people thought I just didn’t care, but the truth is, no matter how much I wanted to remember, I just couldn’t. If you’re forgetting everything, here are some things that can help.

• Keep things in your path. (Put your keys in your shoe)

• Use alarms that tell you what to do. (Label them)

• Pair tasks with existing habits.

• Put notes where you’ll see them.

• Offload info into one trusted place. (Don’t try to keep everything in your brain)

• Do 2-minute tasks right away.

• Make forgetting harder than remembering.

... Read moreADHD affects memory primarily because the brain struggles to filter distractions, which disrupts storing information effectively. As highlighted in the article's image text, working memory acts like a "mental sticky note" that holds information briefly. In ADHD, this note often slips away like a Post-it falling off a fridge, causing tasks and important details to be forgotten quickly. One major factor is prioritization overload. The ADHD brain can view all tasks as equally urgent or none as urgent, creating confusion about what requires attention. This lack of a reliable "mental filing system" means important information can be lost or deferred indefinitely. Additionally, stress and overwhelm further reduce the brain's ability to transfer memories from short-term to long-term storage. The good news is that ADHD forgetfulness is not due to laziness or carelessness but is related to the unique wiring of the ADHD brain. To counteract these memory challenges, external aids like planners, reminders, and visual cues serve as an extra "hard drive" supporting the brain's function. Strategies include keeping essential items in a visible path to remember them effortlessly, setting labeled alarms that prompt specific actions, pairing new tasks with established habits to create natural reminders, and placing notes in areas you frequently see. Another effective approach is offloading information into one trusted location rather than trying to retain everything mentally. Completing quick tasks immediately—known as the two-minute rule—prevents buildup and reduces cognitive load. Crucially, organizing your environment to make forgetting more difficult than remembering can have a significant impact on daily functioning. By understanding the neurological reasons behind ADHD-related forgetfulness and implementing these practical techniques, individuals with ADHD can improve their memory, reduce frustration, and better manage everyday tasks efficiently.
