Stop your bloating

A few weeks ago I noticed my bloating was getting pretty bad and I was even constipated. Being bloated for most of the day is no joke, it is very uncomfortable and painful. Even though a little bloating after eating is totally normal, experiencing bloating for the whole day is not. There are ways I like to help my body with the digestion of my food to decrease bloating. Here are some things I do.

1. Give yourself time to enjoy your food and eat more slowly. Make sure you are chewing your food many times and give yourself time to rest and digest once you are done. Digestion begins the moment you start chewing. Help your body digest faster and by chewing your food well.

2. Make sure you are hydrated and are drinking enough water. You do not want to get constipated and many times this can happen when you are not having liquids. I love having water with lemon the moment I wake up. Starting the day hydrated is very beneficial to your digestion.

3. Eat foods with fiber. Fiber helps out digestion and overall bloating. Make sure you eat fruits and foods high in fiber. Oranges, leafy green, and apples are great examples of these foods.

But then I started noticing a pattern: every time I indulged, that uncomfortable, swollen feeling in my stomach would quickly follow. It felt just like that moment when your jeans suddenly feel too tight, you know? I realized my love for carbonated beverages was a major culprit behind my persistent bloating, and I bet many of you can relate! The truth is, those delightful bubbles in carbonated drinks are actually carbon dioxide gas. When you drink them, you're essentially swallowing a significant amount of gas that then gets trapped in your digestive system. This can lead to that unmistakable bloated feeling, gas, and even abdominal discomfort. It's not just the carbonation either. Many diet sodas contain artificial sweeteners like sorbitol or sucralose. While they might save you calories, these sweeteners can be really tough for your gut bacteria to digest, leading to fermentation and even more gas production. It’s a double whammy for your tummy! Once I connected the dots, I knew I had to make a change. It wasn't easy to give up my fizzy favorites cold turkey, so I started small. Instead of reaching for a soda, I'd try a glass of plain water first. To make it more appealing, I started infusing my water with fresh fruits like slices of grapefruit or green apple, or even some fresh mint and cucumber, just like I saw in some healthy living tips. This made staying hydrated so much more enjoyable and helped my digestion without the extra gas. I even invested in a good water filter pitcher to always have clean, refreshing water on hand. Another great alternative I discovered are herbal teas. Peppermint tea, for instance, is a lifesaver for soothing an upset stomach and reducing gas. Ginger tea is also fantastic for digestion. Sometimes, if I really craved that fizz, I'd opt for plain sparkling water with a tiny splash of real fruit juice, significantly cutting down on the artificial sweeteners and added sugars. Beyond just cutting down on carbonated drinks, remember those other crucial tips for a happy gut. Chewing your food thoroughly, as I mentioned before, helps kickstart digestion right from the mouth. And don't forget your fiber! Incorporating more kale, celery, and other leafy greens, along with fruits like apples and oranges – all the good stuff shown in those healthy plates – can keep your digestive system running smoothly, preventing constipation which often goes hand-in-hand with bloating. Making these small adjustments to my drinking habits, alongside my other digestive wellness routines, has made a huge difference. I feel lighter, more comfortable, and that constant bloated feeling is largely gone. If you're struggling with bloating, I highly recommend looking at your carbonated drink intake. You might be surprised by the positive changes you experience!
