DITL Psychiatry Resident 🧠

Spend a day with me as a Psychiatry Resident !

Start my mornings off with breakfast ( and coffee) and commute to work- right now I have a one hour drive :(

Then I see patients all day, depending on if I'm inpatient or outpatient that day.

I try to always work out during the week, sometimes before, sometimes after work- then enjoy dinner ( maybe a dessert) and watch a show to unwind. Not awfully exciting but some days are more than others !

... Read moreThe life of a psychiatry resident is both rewarding and demanding. Each day starts with fueling up on a healthy breakfast and coffee to set the tone for a busy schedule ahead. Commutes can take an hour or more, making it essential to establish a morning routine that includes mindfulness or mental preparation for the day. Once at work, residents typically split their time between outpatient and inpatient settings, seeing a variety of patients with diverse needs. This hands-on experience is essential for building diagnostic skills, therapeutic techniques, and the ability to handle complex emotional issues. Interactions with patients can range from initial assessments to follow-up consultations, highlighting the importance of communication and empathy in psychiatric practice. After a fulfilling day of patient care, physical fitness becomes a priority. Gym time is not just a way to stay in shape; it offers a vital mental break from the stresses of work. Finding that balance between personal well-being and professional demands is key for mental health professionals. Evenings are often spent enjoying dinner, sometimes indulging in dessert, followed by downtime watching shows or engaging in hobbies. This downtime is essential for relaxation and maintaining mental clarity during intense residency years. It’s about finding joy and clarity amidst the challenges of a demanding career in medicine. For those interested in a career in psychiatry, this glimpse underscores the dedication and resilience needed to thrive in this field.
