4 things college kids NEED to be doing this summer

There's about TWO MONTHS left until colleges start back up. I always like to be super prepared for all of my classes. Some people don't like to prep so early BUT there are things college students absolutely NEED to be doing this summer.

Getting ahead (even just a little bit) gives you a major advantage over your classmates. It's doing things like this that helps you secure all As in the fall 💅🏻

THINGS YOU NEED TO DO THIS SUMMER:

☀️ Read books related to your upcoming classes

• Learn a little bit about the material you'll be expected to know

• Doesn't have to be anything fancy or complex — just something related to your class

☀️ Review material from foundational classes

• You can't expect to learn higher-level material if you don't remember the basics

• Review notes, watch old lectures, watch YouTube videos, read articles/books

☀️ Volunteer at a non-profit or work for free

• Make sure it's something you're passionate about/interested in

• Don't even have to be a lot of hours each week

☀️ Network + connect

• Use platforms like Linkedin to connect with other students and professionals

• If you're feeling extra brave, you can email people who work in fields you're interested in!

... Read moreAs summer approaches its final stretch before college resumes, students can maximize their readiness by focusing on strategic activities that underpin academic and career success. Firstly, reading books pertinent to upcoming classes provides a meaningful head start. For example, if you’re enrolled in a European history course covering 1400-1800, feel free to explore early modern European history texts—these don’t have to be overly complex but should familiarize you with core concepts. This primes your mind for deeper engagement once classes begin. Secondly, revisiting foundational course material is indispensable. Higher-level courses build upon basics mastered earlier; for instance, upper-level biology classes demand solid knowledge from introductory biology. Reviewing notes, past lectures, educational YouTube content, or relevant articles reinforces these essentials, ensuring you’re not starting advanced courses on shaky ground. Volunteering or interning in a field tied to your interests is a third impactful activity. Whether shadowing at a dental clinic if you aim to enter dentistry or supporting a non-profit aligned with your passions, such experiences enrich your resume and provide insight into potential career paths. Importantly, these commitments need not consume extensive time weekly but should be meaningful. Lastly, networking through platforms like LinkedIn is a powerful tool. Connecting with fellow students and professionals can open doors you may not find otherwise. Don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals working in your fields of interest—polite, informed contact can lead to mentorship, internships, or job opportunities. Collectively, these four approaches—strategic reading, reviewing foundational knowledge, purpose-driven volunteering, and proactive networking—not only help secure academic excellence but also build a robust foundation for your future career. Embracing these summer tasks will give you a competitive advantage and greater confidence going into the new semester.
