5 MYTHS about college that are COMPLETELY wrong!

I'll be going into my junior year of college in the fall! I remember when I started as a freshman, I was so nervous 😭 I heard so many myths and rumors about what college was like. It didn't help that a lot of creators kinda fear-mongered the experience either 💀

Here are the top FIVE MYTHS I hear most often about starting college (and the REAL TRUTH):

❌ Myth 1: Professors are mean

• A lot of professors truly care about their students and their wellbeing. HOWEVER, you need to communicate your problems to them so they can help out as needed.

• The professors I've had that I've ended up not liking was never due to them being mean. I just didn't like their teaching style/subject/strictness.

❌ Myth 2: You'll be besties w your roommate

• I certainly did NOT have the best roommate experience as a freshmen. It was literally horrendous!

• Be friendly with your roommate and be willing to hang out with them. BUT don't set yourself up to be disappointed by having unrealistic expectations!

❌ Myth 3: The Freshmen 15 is real

• The freshmen 15 refers to many freshmen gaining 15 lbs during their first year. This didn't happen to me or anyone I know.

• I think this is such a weird myth that people spread (and harmful!). You'll be doing a lot of walking and moving your body so this is unlikely anyway.

❌ Myth 4: Friday classes are the absolute worst

• I've had Friday classes every single semester of college and they haven't bothered me once. Most people have Friday classes anyway.

• Usually any Friday classes you might have will be finished by noon!

❌ Myth 5: You'll be laughed at for not partying

• Trust no one pays attention to who goes out and who doesn't — there's so many other things to focus on.

• Even if you go to a major party school, no one will call you out/laugh at you for wanting to stay home. DO NOT FEEL PRESSURED TO GO OUT IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO!

... Read moreHey everyone! Since we just talked about some major college myths, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into a question I get asked a lot, and honestly, one I asked myself constantly before freshman year: "Is college harder than high school?" It's a totally valid concern, and I remember feeling super anxious about it. From my student's perspective after a couple of years, I can tell you it's not simply "harder" or "easier." It's *different*. Think of it less like a harder level of the same game, and more like a whole new game with new rules. In high school, you often have a more structured day, with teachers checking in constantly, reminding you about assignments, and maybe even chasing you down for late work. The pace is generally slower, and you're guided pretty closely. College, on the other hand, demands a lot more independence. Your schedule might be really spread out, giving you huge chunks of free time. This is where the myth of "Friday classes are the worst" comes in – sometimes those Friday classes are the only ones you have that day, and the rest is yours to manage! But that "free time" isn't really free; it's your time to study, do readings, work on projects, or simply decompress. No one is going to hold your hand. Professors, as we discussed, are there to help, but you have to initiate that help. They expect you to be a proactive learner. This shift in responsibility can feel daunting at first, making it seem "harder." Academically, the material can be more challenging, but it's also often more focused on subjects you're truly passionate about. Instead of skimming topics, you delve deep. You might have fewer assignments, but each one carries more weight, and exams are often comprehensive. This means consistent effort is key, not just cramming before midterms. My laptop is practically glued to me for research and writing papers! Beyond academics, the social and personal aspects are a huge adjustment. You're living independently, maybe for the first time, on a busy college campus scene. This means managing your own schedule, your finances, your meals – and yes, dealing with roommates! While my first roommate experience wasn't ideal (as I mentioned, don't expect to be immediate besties!), learning to navigate shared spaces and different personalities is a massive life skill. And about the "Freshman 15" myth? While it didn't happen to me, the reason people worry about it is valid: new routines, stress eating, and less structured exercise. But it's also an opportunity to build healthy habits. I actually discovered a love for fitness in college, sometimes following workout video routines in my dorm or hitting the campus gym. It’s all about finding what works for you to manage stress and stay healthy amidst all the changes. So, is college harder? I'd say it challenges you in new ways. It pushes you to become more resilient, self-sufficient, and organized. It's a huge growth period. If you go in prepared, understanding that it's a different game with different expectations, you'll thrive. Don't let the fear of "harder" stop you from diving into an incredible experience! It's a journey of discovery, both academically and personally.
