... Read moreLiving with complex PTSD (CPTSD) often means dealing with the overwhelming effects of trauma on the nervous system, which can lead to periods of dissociation—feeling detached from one’s body or surroundings. From my personal experience, embracing dark humor has been a powerful tool in navigating these moments. It might sound unusual, but finding humor in difficult situations helps lessen the intensity of emotional pain and makes it easier to connect with others who truly understand. Dissociation can sometimes feel like an involuntary escape, making it hard to stay present or engaged, especially when anxiety or triggers arise. I’ve found that acknowledging this without judgment, and gently redirecting my focus to grounding techniques like mindful breathing or sensory input, helps soothe my nervous system and reduce the severity of dissociative episodes. Another helpful approach is sharing experiences with supportive friends or communities who recognize the complexity of CPTSD and nervous system healing. The camaraderie of "just two bitches trying not to dissociate," as humorously depicted, reflects the shared struggle and resilience among those healing. This fosters a sense of belonging and decreases feelings of isolation, which are critical for recovery. Incorporating these coping mechanisms alongside professional therapy has made the healing path more manageable. Remember, healing is non-linear and deeply personal—using dark humor or other unconventional methods can be valid and effective ways to reclaim your life while working toward nervous system regulation and emotional balance.
