Highlighting the CPT book

I'm just sharing a clip from a TikTok live that I did yesterday, about highlighting the radiology section of the CPT book. It was my first live, even though I've been doing coding videos for a long time. if you are currently a medical coding student, this will help you prepare for the CPC exam. I always recommend to my students that this is something that they find time to do.#medicalcoder #medicalcoders #medicalcodingstudent #AAPC #medicalcoding

... Read moreBuilding on my recent TikTok live about highlighting, I wanted to dive deeper into how you can truly transform your CPT book into an indispensable tool for medical coding, especially if you're gearing up for the CPC exam. It’s not just about highlighting; it’s about making it YOUR code book, personalized for quick and accurate coding. First off, let's talk about CPT book tabs. Highlighting is fantastic, but tabs are your express lane to specific sections. I've found that using pre-printed tabs for major sections like Evaluation & Management (E&M), Anesthesia, Surgery (and its subsections like Integumentary, Musculoskeletal, etc.), Radiology, Pathology & Laboratory, and Medicine is a huge time-saver. Some people prefer to make their own tabs, color-coding them by section or even by common modifiers. The key is consistency. When you're under exam pressure or trying to code quickly in practice, those tabs will guide your hand instantly. Don't forget to tab the Appendices too – they hold crucial information like modifier definitions and deleted codes. Beyond just highlighting and tabbing, how do you truly use your CPT code book effectively? Think of it as a living document. I always encourage students to write notes directly in the margins. If you find a particularly tricky code description or a useful guideline, jot down a short explanation or a reference to another page. For example, when I was learning, I'd often write down common scenarios or clinical examples next to complex codes. This helps solidify your understanding and acts as a quick memory jogger. Underlining key terms within code descriptions and guidelines in different colors can also make information pop. Maybe green for inclusions, red for exclusions, and blue for specific definitions. This 'making a code book' approach is all about personalizing it to your learning style and the information you find most challenging. Understanding that the CPT book is a publication of the American Medical Association (AMA) clarifies its authority and structure. They also offer resources like the AMA CPT Smart App, which can be a fantastic digital companion for quick lookups and learning on the go, though for the exam, you'll likely rely on your physical book. While CPT codes are all about procedures and services, remember they work hand-in-hand with other coding systems. For instance, while CPT covers the 'what' (the procedure), ICD-10-CM codes (for diagnoses) cover the 'why' (the reason for the procedure). Although my focus was on CPT highlighting, a complete medical coder needs to navigate both seamlessly. For example, if you're coding a brain stem bleed (an ICD-10 diagnosis), you'd also need a CPT code for any associated procedures performed. Knowing how these different code books interact is vital for accurate claim submission. Ultimately, mastering the CPT book involves a combination of smart study techniques: strategic highlighting, efficient tabbing, personal annotations, and a clear understanding of its structure and relationship with other coding systems. These methods, based on my own experience and what I recommend to students, will make your CPT book a powerful ally in your medical coding journey.
