Using scraps of clay to create something new
Making something new with leftover clay is one of my favorite things to do. The clay was translucent, so I mixed to get the purple colors you are seeing. It’s such a treat!

It's such a satisfying feeling, isn't it? When you're making something beautiful with clay, and you end up with those little bits and pieces left over. For ages, I used to just toss them, thinking they were too small to be useful. But I've had a complete mindset shift, and now, my absolute favorite part of any clay session is challenging myself to create something entirely new from those tiny scrap clay remnants! It's become a little game, and honestly, some of my most cherished pieces have come from these 'leftovers.' If you're like me and want to embrace a more zero-waste approach to your crafting, you're in for a treat because the possibilities for things to make out of clay scraps are endless. Beyond just mixing colors, which is a fantastic way to get unique shades like the gorgeous purple I created, you can actually design entirely new items. One of my go-to clay use cases for scraps is making small charms. Think tiny flowers, miniature fruits, or even abstract shapes that can be added to larger pieces or used as standalone embellishments. These are perfect if you're looking for small things to make out of clay. For those who love handmade jewelry, scraps are a goldmine. You can roll them into tiny beads, create mosaic patterns by pressing different colored scraps together, or even make unique stud earrings. I've found that mixing translucent scraps with opaque ones gives a really interesting depth and texture. If you're wondering what can I make with clay that's both decorative and functional, think about small dishes for rings or earrings. These don't require much clay, and you can create stunning swirled patterns by layering and twisting different colored scraps together before shaping. Another great way to use them is in mixed media projects. I often find myself creating little clay embellishments to add to journals, picture frames, or even small decorative boxes. For molded clay crafts decorative functional items, you can press your scraps into silicone molds to create intricate little shapes without needing a lot of raw material. This is particularly effective with polymer clay, as it holds detail so well. And what about air dry clay? While my current project used polymer clay, how to make things with air dry clay scraps is just as exciting! You can roll out thin sheets and use mini cookie cutters for tiny ornaments or gift tags. Or, if you have a collection of dried air dry clay scraps, you can rehydrate them slightly with water to create a paste for patching or adding texture to other air dry clay projects – a truly useful trick! Don't underestimate the power of combining colors. When I had some translucent clay, I specifically looked for contrasting or complementary opaque scraps to mix in. The result was this vibrant purple, which I wouldn't have achieved if I hadn't experimented. It's a fantastic example of turning something overlooked into something truly beautiful and unique. So, next time you finish a project, gather those little bits. You might just discover your next favorite creation!
