DNF’d

So I rarely DNF books, I honestly try not to, because you never know. But I am going to not finish this one, I might come back to it later and try again, but the first 2 (and even the novella!) of this series REALLY had me loving it and this one feels so… flat & boring. I catch myself doing anything but paying attention. So I’ve stopped it & picked a different book in a different genre.

How often do you DNF? Do you give a certain amount of chapters or pages for a book to grab your attention?

... Read moreMany readers struggle with the decision to DNF, or 'Did Not Finish,' a book, especially when they have enjoyed previous installments of a series. It’s a common experience to grow attached to a story or author and then find a book that doesn’t quite capture attention the same way. This can often feel frustrating, as the expectation built from earlier books sets a high bar. DNFing a book doesn’t mean failure or lack of commitment; it can be a healthy choice to preserve reading joy and mental space. Some readers give themselves a fixed number of chapters or pages to engage before deciding whether to continue. For instance, many recommend giving a book 50 pages or three chapters to show its true potential, though this varies depending on reading speed and genre. Audiobooks also offer a unique experience, as highlighted by the audiobook references like "Crowns of Nyaxia" and "The Ongirl Heart" performed by narrators such as Amanda Leigh Cobb and Aiden Snow. Listening to a book might impact how long a listener chooses to stick with a story since narration style influences engagement. A practical way to decide involves assessing if the story evokes curiosity, emotions, or a desire to learn what happens next. If a book feels flat or fails to hold attention—like the experience shared of feeling distracted or bored—it’s reasonable to pause or switch genres to rekindle enthusiasm. Ultimately, discussing these experiences within communities like #lemon8bookclub or forums for readers can help normalize the decision to DNF and provide support. Sharing how readers manage their reading habits and book choices enriches communal knowledge and encourages others to prioritize their personal reading pleasure.

Books I wish I DNF’d ❌
This was before I knew how to DNF a book and… I wish I had with these. My main reasons were either the book was way too unrealistic for a thriller/unbelievable, not age appropriate or just straight up boring 🥱 No hate if you liked these! They just were my cup of tea and that’s okay! ✨
