What I Wish I Knew When I Started Knitting

When I first learned to knit I was convinced I need to practice my knit and purl stitches A LOT. In fact, I started a seed stitch scarf to do that, alternating between those two stitches the entire time. This takes forever and was completely unnecessary (although I do think it looks very pretty!)

What I wish I did instead? Maybe practice a few small squares of knitting with ribbing on the end, and then jump right into a project that I would actually want to use. My first project after realizing I would never finish that scarf was a pair of socks. I learned SO much and actually started to enjoy the knitting process after that!

... Read moreI totally get it if you're asking yourself, 'is knitting hard?' When I first picked up needles, I felt like I had ten left thumbs! My hands just wouldn't cooperate, and trying to follow those cryptic patterns felt like learning a new language. Itโ€™s easy to get overwhelmed by all the different stitches, yarn weights, and needle sizes. I remember looking at beautifully finished projects, like a cozy striped sock, and thinking Iโ€™d never get there. But hereโ€™s the thing: knitting isn't inherently 'hard' in the way solving a complex math problem is. Itโ€™s more about developing muscle memory for repetitive motions and understanding a new kind of logic. The initial hurdle often feels steep because it's so different from what most of us do every day. One of my biggest initial struggles was just holding the yarn and needles correctly โ€“ it felt so awkward! My stitches were often messy. I even remember trying to make a basic seed stitch piece, much like the light blue one I mentioned in my main post, and wondering if my hands would ever get the rhythm right. So, how do you overcome that initial 'hard' feeling? Based on my own journey, here are a few things that really helped me push past the frustration: Start Chunky: Seriously, grab some chunky yarn and big needles (like 8mm or 9mm). The bigger stitches are much easier to see and manipulate, which is a huge confidence booster. You can actually see what youโ€™re doing! Embrace Video Tutorials: If a written pattern isn't clicking, YouTube is your best friend. Watching someone else's hands perform a knit or purl stitch, or even how to cast on, can make all the difference. I watched countless videos just to get my knit stitch looking consistent. Don't Fear the Mistakes: Oh, the mistakes! I used to get so stressed about dropping a stitch or making a weird hole. But everyone makes mistakes. Learn how to 'read' your knitting to spot errors and, crucially, how to fix them. Sometimes, itโ€™s easier to just un-knit a few rows ('tinking') or 'frog' it all out and start again. Itโ€™s part of the process, and the more you fix, the better you understand how stitches are formed. Practice Small: Instead of diving into a huge project, make small swatches. Maybe a simple square, like the yellow knitted swatch you see in the photos. Just practice your knit and purl stitches until they feel natural. Thereโ€™s no need to commit to a giant scarf like I did initially! Once youโ€™re comfortable, then you can move on. Choose the Right First Project: While I eventually loved making socks, they might not be the easiest first project for everyone. Think simple rectangles: dishcloths, scarves, or even a basic headband. The satisfaction of finishing something, even small, is incredibly motivating. Find Your Community: Whether it's an online forum, a local knitting group, or just a friend who knits, having people to ask questions and share your progress with makes a huge difference. I found so much encouragement and practical advice from other knitters. It really is a journey, and that initial 'hard' phase eventually gives way to a truly meditative and rewarding hobby. So, if you're wondering if knitting is hard, my answer is: it can be challenging at first, but with a little patience and the right approach, it becomes incredibly enjoyable. Don't give up!
