How adhd feels

6 days agoEdited to

... Read moreLiving with ADHD is often described as navigating a world where time feels strange—sometimes it vanishes, other times it stands still. From my own experience and from reading many shared stories, the sensation of carrying "a million tabs" in your brain is very real. It’s not about laziness or lack of trying; it’s about a cognitive wiring that makes focus fluctuate unpredictably. One of the hardest parts is dealing with executive function struggles—planning, starting tasks, and making decisions can feel like climbing a mountain every single day. Trying to focus can take hours, yet moments of hyperfocus surprise you with intense concentration on something stimulating. However, this intense focus is exhausting and fades quickly, leaving behind feelings of overwhelm and fatigue. ADHD also heavily impacts emotional regulation. Feelings often come in overwhelming waves, intensifying sensations like rejection or sensitivity to environment. It’s crucial to understand these are not flaws but facets of a brain wired differently, requiring patience and self-compassion. Memory works differently too—working memory challenges mean routines and follow-through can slip away easily. Many find body doubling (working alongside someone else) helpful to maintain motivation and structure. I have found that recognizing ADHD as a unique brain function—not a failure or lack of effort—helps reduce self-criticism. Medications can aid, but self-compassion is equally powerful, providing grace during difficult moments. Ultimately, embracing the creativity, empathy, and big ideas that often come with ADHD while acknowledging the struggles fosters better mental well-being. This mindset shift—from viewing ADHD as a deficit to recognizing it as a different way of thinking—empowers many to progress and thrive, exactly as they are.
