💭Okay, first I loved this. The audiobook is done in a duet style, which makes it a joy to listen to. I love the gladiator type of stories. For me, it’s a nice addition to all the “trials” type of books we see. This book also has the vampire/human power struggle dynamics as well. Most humans have some type of magical ability to help. Their power level does influence their classification in the book’s society. Add in the god/goddess aspects, and this book becomes more than meets the eye. I am going to assume, with how this book ended, there will be at least another book. In my personal opinion, all those finer details that were dropped like Easter eggs (gods/goddess and their war between them, how power is grown, and maybe even awakened. As well as relationships between powerful humans and vampires) will all come into play. Now, you could read this book and see this as a basic vampire gladiator romantasy if you aren’t picking up on all the finer details being woven into the world building. I highly recommend not overlooking them, and if you did, take a moment and sit back and think about them before just writing off this book. This isn’t a surface level read, and if you read it as one, you are missing a TON. Anyways, the book was full of action, and it really kept me entertained because, as I said, there is a lot buried within the plot if you are picking it up. The romance is angsty, and I do love angst. Although I am interested to see where it’s going to go because I do have a feeling things are going to get messy. I was able to get a physical copy of this book as well, so I did listen as well as read along. As an immersive reader, you know I will highly recommend the audiobook (especially since it’s duet, they are my favorite). The narration is done REALLY well. But if you aren’t an audiobook fan, then pick up a physical copy because the story is so good. I devoured this one. I, no joke, started it before bed, read until my eyes were heavy. Then woke up, made coffee, and finished the book.
💬 This is a thrilling fantasy romance. This book does have darker scenes and themes. The romance in this book is a second chance romance. There is open door spice. Arvelle is left with no choice but to make a vampire blood deal that will save her brother. The vampire only asks that she enter the sundering and kill the emperor. Both are impossible tasks. She either succeeds or her brother dies. The primus, the prince, and unsolved murders add to a situation she is already struggling to succeed at.
