Throat closing / mcas / histamine intolerance

2025/1/7 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so validating to hear others talk about that unsettling feeling of your throat closing up. I know exactly what you mean – that slightly concerning, 'is this serious?' moment without necessarily needing an Epipen. I've been piecing things together myself, trying to figure out why these random incidents happen. For me, it’s often tied to certain foods, like that one scary time after just a single bite of airplane chocolate, or even after eating sushi, which I usually enjoy. It’s like my body suddenly reacts differently, and I’m left wondering what just happened. Taking something like Advil, as you mentioned, can sometimes feel like a desperate attempt to calm things down, even if you’re not sure it helps! But it’s not just the throat, right? I've started noticing other strange symptoms that I'm now connecting to Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) or histamine intolerance. Have you ever experienced a sudden flush on your face, like a heat wave just hit you out of nowhere? Sometimes my face feels hot and tingly, or I'll get an inexplicable rash on my skin, almost like hives, especially around my face or neck. It's not always obvious, but when you start connecting the dots, it makes you think. Some people even talk about "skin writing," where a light scratch leaves a raised red mark. I haven't quite seen that on myself, but it shows how varied these reactions can be. Beyond the visible, I’ve also had moments where my lips feel tingly or swell slightly, and my eyes can get incredibly itchy or watery without any obvious allergen around. And that's not even getting into the general feeling of malaise or brain fog that can accompany these episodes. If you're in perimenopause like some of my friends, these symptoms can be even more confusing, as hormonal shifts can really stir things up and sometimes trigger more histamine release. It's like a whole body mystery! When it comes to triggers, I’ve learned that it’s not just specific foods like my chocolate or sushi incidents. High-histamine foods are a big one, but stress, temperature changes, perfumes, or even exercise can set me off. It makes eating out or trying new things a bit of a minefield. I'm starting to keep a food and symptom diary, which has been surprisingly helpful in identifying culprits. For example, I'm trying to be mindful of aged cheeses, fermented foods, and certain leftovers that are notorious for their histamine content. It’s definitely a journey of self-discovery and advocacy. Finding a doctor who understands MCAS or histamine intolerance can be challenging, but it’s so important to keep pushing for answers. We’re all just trying to piece these strange occurrences together and find some relief and understanding. If you're experiencing anything similar, know you're not alone in feeling confused or even a little scared. It’s about listening to your body and being your own health detective.
