My must-have pens for note-taking!!!

Ever since I started getting interested in stationery, I was always on the hunt for reliable pens that are cheap, easy to get, ergonomic! Over the years I’ve accumulated many different types but here are some I found are best performing in every category!

For gel pens, you can’t go wrong with Zebra Sarasa, the Mark On series, or the R series. They’re super smooth and have vibrant inks. If you’re looking for one that’s quick drying and doesn’t smudge under highlighter, Mark On is the one.

Pentel Energel is also great if you’re looking for a quick drying pen , but they smudge a little bit under highlighter, unless I wait a couple hours later. I only use this pen when I know I’m not highlighting anything.

For oil-based ballpoint pens, Uni Jetstream is the one. I found the 0.7 writes so much smoother than 0.5 tip, but I like both either ways. Honorable mention if you like needle tip: Tombow Monograph Lite

Sometimes when I’m taking notes from readings, I’d use some markers like these Muji water based felt markers to write titles or subtitles. It’s the easiest way for me to split sections!

... Read moreFinding the right pens can seriously elevate your note-taking game, especially when you're juggling lectures, readings, and revision. As someone who's spent countless hours poring over textbooks and filling notebooks, I've learned that a good pen isn't just about putting ink on paper – it's about comfort, clarity, and making the learning process more enjoyable. When it comes to gel pens, they're often my first choice for detailed notes and color-coding. The smooth, vibrant ink truly makes a difference. For college note-taking, quick-drying gel pens are a lifesaver, especially if you're a lefty or tend to highlight immediately. I've found that some brands truly excel at being smudge-proof, which is crucial when you want to avoid messy highlighters. The array of vibrant ink colors available also means you can create a super organized system, assigning different colors to key concepts, definitions, or tasks. This visual distinction can be incredibly helpful for memory retention when you're reviewing your notes later. Plus, the fine tips often available in gel pens allow for neat, compact writing, perfect for fitting lots of information onto a single page. Now, for those longer writing sessions or when I need a pen that's reliable on any paper type, oil-based ballpoint pens are my go-to. While gel pens offer that immediate pop, ballpoints, especially those with a smoother glide, are fantastic for endurance. They tend to last longer, making them a more budget-friendly option for students. I often find myself reaching for a ballpoint when I'm just jotting down quick thoughts, drafting essays, or filling out forms. Look for ones that offer consistent ink flow and a comfortable grip, as these features become paramount during extended study sessions. Some even come in sleek designs with clear barrels, letting you keep an eye on your ink levels. I've personally experimented with various needle-tip pens as well, finding their precision excellent for intricate diagrams or very small handwriting. Beyond just the ink type, don't underestimate the power of felt-tip markers or sign pens for enhancing your notes. I love using them for creating bold titles, subtitles, or drawing attention to critical sections. They help break up the monotony of dense text and make your notes much easier to navigate at a glance. When choosing markers, I look for water-based options that don't bleed through standard notebook paper. Experimenting with different pastel-colored pens or even a multi-pen can add a touch of personality and functionality to your stationery collection, making your study routine feel a little less like a chore and more like a creative endeavor. Ultimately, the best pens for writing notes are the ones that feel right in your hand and meet your specific needs. I always recommend doing a quick swatch test in your notebook to check for ink details, line variations, and dry time. This helps ensure your chosen pens deliver smooth lines and vibrant ink colors without smudging or bleeding. Happy note-taking!
