How oat milk affects gut health!

oat milk is getting demonized on social media right now …

There’s a few reasons this is happening:

1. It’s starchy aka creates a glucose spike

2. some contain seed oils & gums

Im gonna break these down for you & how this can affect gut health & hormones! It’s important to understand the WHY behind claims so you can make an educated choice for yourself.

1. Oat milk is striped of its fiber & protein during the “milking” process lol leaving mostly starch. When you consume (sugar) blood sugar does spike.

Constantly spiking your blood sugar can lead to insulin resistance which can affect hormones & gut health.

BUT this is also a normal thing (we eat carbs all the time & why we have insulin) SO it is not something to fear but something to be mindful of if you’re struggling with hormones or blood sugar balance. If you usually have oat milk in your coffee try adding cinnamon, eat before, get less sugar or syrups, add mct oil, go on a walk while drinking your coffee (habit stacking)

2. Most oat milks have additives like gums & seed oils as do a lot of other non dairy milks. These are controversial in how they affect our gut microbiome & inflammation over time.

If you can, buy the oat milks without seed oils or gums or making it at home is great too!!

I personally drink oat milk because I’m allergic to milk and nuts! I get coffee everyday at my local spot with oat milk that isn’t the “cleanest” but I love the taste and convenience! At home if I do have oat milk I get the Three Tree’s brand that has omega 3’s in it to help balance the blood sugar spike.

So hopefully that provides some insight to the oat milk debate! Remember to ALWAYS do what’s best for you 🫶🏻

... Read moreMany of us, myself included, have wondered: Is oat milk truly bad for your gut? The answer isn't a simple yes or no, but rather a nuanced look at ingredients, processing, and how we consume it. While conversations on social media often demonize oat milk, understanding the 'why' can empower you to make gut-friendly choices. Let's deep dive into the two main concerns: blood sugar spikes and controversial additives. The original article touched on how oat milk, stripped of its fiber during processing, can lead to glucose spikes. To expand on this, consistent and rapid blood sugar elevation, even from seemingly healthy carbs, can put stress on your system. Over time, this can contribute not just to insulin resistance, but also to chronic inflammation and even impact your gut microbiome balance. When your blood sugar crashes after a spike, it can leave you feeling sluggish and craving more sugar, creating a cycle that isn't ideal for sustained energy or gut health. To combat this, consider pairing your oat milk coffee with a meal rich in protein and healthy fats, or even taking a short walk after consumption. These strategies can significantly blunt the glucose response. Then there's the additive dilemma. Many oat milks on the market, such as the widely available Califia Farms Oat Barista Blend, often contain ingredients like gums (e.g., xanthan gum, guar gum) and seed oils (e.g., sunflower oil, canola oil). These are typically added for texture, stability, and to prevent separation. The concern regarding gums is that, for some sensitive individuals, they can cause digestive upset like bloating or gas by altering the gut microbiome. While more research is needed to understand their long-term effects on the general population, if you experience discomfort, it's worth noting. As for seed oils, while they aren't inherently 'bad,' a diet high in processed foods often means an excessive intake of omega-6 fatty acids from these oils, which can potentially contribute to inflammation if not balanced with sufficient omega-3s. So, how do you navigate the oat milk aisle to find a 'gut milk drink' that actually supports your health? My personal rule of thumb is to check the ingredient list. Look for brands with minimal ingredients: ideally just oats, water, and perhaps a pinch of salt or an enzyme for sweetness. Avoid those with excessive added sugars, artificial flavors, and a long list of gums or refined seed oils if you're sensitive. Brands like Three Trees Organic Oatmilk with Seeds are great examples of cleaner options, often omitting these controversial additives and sometimes even including beneficial omega-3s, which can help counteract any potential inflammatory effects from other dietary sources. Making your own oat milk at home is another fantastic option, giving you complete control over what goes into your glass. Ultimately, listening to your body and making informed choices based on ingredients are key to enjoying oat milk in a way that truly benefits your gut health.
