💊🧠 Let’s Talk Psychotropic Meds!

Since my childhood, I’ve struggled with my mental health. I’ve since been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, ADHD, and Autism.

I’ve been on meds to treat my mental health conditions since I was 16, and I’ve tried several different medications. Some worked, some didn’t, some came with negative side effects, some did exactly what they were intended to do. But the most difficult thing about taking medication for my mental health wasn’t the side effects of the pills, but the stigma surrounding it.

I was anxious about starting an antidepressant for the first time. I had heard that it can turn people into numb, emotionless zombies. But as the medicine started working, I found that it wasn’t true for me at all. I became more motivated to leave my room and spend time with my family, and had fewer negative thoughts about myself.

But the first medication I tried didn’t end up being the right one for me. Neither did the second, or the third. It took years of trial and error to find the right medications for me. My current meds regimen includes an antidepressant (SSRI), a low dose of an antipsychotic, an atypical antidepressant (NDRI), and a stimulant.

I used to feel a lot of shame about the amount of medication I need in order to function. Even with all this medicine, there is still a lot that I struggle with. But I know that I’m in a much better place mentally now than I was before medication. Meds aren’t the right answer for everyone’s mental health journey, but they’re helpful and necessary for so many people - and there’s nothing wrong with that.

“Medication for mental illness means you are intelligently using the resources available to you, so you can live the best life possible.”

... Read morePsychotropic medications play a vital role in managing various mental health conditions, yet they often come with misconceptions. Many individuals feel stigmatized or believe that they should try to cope without medication. However, research highlights that around 60% of adults and 50% of youth experiencing mental health issues do not receive the care they need due to these societal attitudes. The stigma surrounding mental illness can deter people from seeking help. A significant portion of individuals with mental health conditions worry about how their medication will be perceived by family, friends, and employers. It's essential to challenge these misconceptions by educating ourselves about mental health topics. Understanding the benefits and limitations of psychiatric medication can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their treatment paths. Furthermore, healthcare professionals emphasize the importance of a tailored approach to medication—what works for one person may not work for another due to unique biological and psychological differences. Thus, open discussions about mental health, medication efficacy, and personal experiences can significantly reduce stigma and encourage others to seek help without fear of judgment. Embracing mental health discussions fosters a supportive community where recovery is achievable and celebrated.

Okay besties… let’s talk ADHD meds. I’ve been on Adderall, and while it’s been life changing for my ADHD, it definitely comes with side effects. For me, the biggest ones are a suppressed appetite (sometimes I forget to eat), a higher heart rate, and feeling a little too wired/awake at times. But
