Building Trust on Night Shift with Patients 🌙🩺

Working night shift means I often meet patients at their most vulnerable — tired, scared, and alone.

One night on my step down floor a patient refused all of their meds and wouldn’t talk to me. Instead of pushing away from them, I sat, listened, and simply showed up for them.

By the morning, the patient told me, “You’re the first nurse who didn’t rush me”. That moment reminded me that trust isn’t built by charts - it’s built by PRESENCE. Be the calm in their storm, and trust me they’ll let you in. 💌

How do you build trust with your patients on night shift? 🫶🏼

... Read moreWorking the night shift in a healthcare environment can present unique challenges when it comes to building patient trust. Patients may feel vulnerable, anxious, or disoriented during nighttime hours. To create rapport with patients, start by ensuring a calm and soothing environment; this can drastically help alleviate their fears. Simple gestures, like maintaining eye contact, actively listening to their concerns, and providing reassurance about their care plan can enhance comfort levels. Additionally, positioning yourself as a steady presence during their most challenging moments can foster a deeper sense of trust. Consider incorporating personalized communication techniques into your interactions. Ask open-ended questions and encourage patients to express their feelings or fears about their health conditions. Transparency about procedures, medications, and what they can expect can further demystify their experience. Reinforce the idea that they're not alone during their shifts by introducing yourself and making it clear that you're there to support them. Building trust also extends beyond immediate interactions. Continual follow-up on their concerns and showing that you remember them from the night before can help solidify rapport. Utilize every interaction as an opportunity to demonstrate empathy and understanding. By being a consistent, calming presence, patients will not only feel safer during their night shifts but are also likely to remember their care throughout the day, leading to a healthier nurse-patient relationship.
