As a nurse, what’s your preference? 🩺💉

🩺 Would you rather work 3 twelve-hour shifts or 5 eight-hour shifts?

I swear I debate this on the daily. Some days I think 3 12s are the best thing ever — get in, grind it out, and enjoy the 4 days off. Other days… I’m on hour 11, my body hurts, my charting is behind, and I’m questioning why I ever romanticized this schedule in the first place lol.

Then there’s 5 8s. More routine, less exhaustion (in theory), and you actually feel like a functioning human after work. But the tradeoff? You’re literally at work every single day. No random weekday freedom. No long stretches off. Just clocking in, clocking out, repeat.

So I genuinely want to know:

Which one do you prefer — 3 12s or 5 8s? And why?

... Read moreAs a nurse, choosing between 3 twelve-hour shifts and 5 eight-hour shifts is a common debate, as each schedule has unique advantages and challenges. Working 3 twelve-hour shifts allows for four consecutive days off, offering extended rest periods that many nurses cherish for recovery and personal activities. However, those long shifts can be physically and mentally exhausting. After working nearly an entire half-day in one go, nurses often find themselves battling fatigue, delayed charting, and increased stress by the eleventh or twelfth hour. On the other hand, 5 eight-hour shifts tend to provide a more balanced daily routine. These shorter shifts generally cause less exhaustion and allow nurses to maintain a consistent daily schedule, often feeling more like a ‘normal’ workweek. The downside is the lack of long breaks during the week, meaning fewer opportunities for spontaneous weekday plans and less extended time off. Nurses working these shifts may appreciate the predictability but might also experience the monotony of daily work without significant down-time. In considering these options, it’s essential to reflect on your personal health, family commitments, and job responsibilities. Nurses who prioritize having multiple consecutive days off or need significant recovery time often prefer the 3 twelve-hour shifts despite the daily intensity. Those who favor routine and less extreme daily fatigue may lean toward the 5 eight-hour shifts. Additionally, different healthcare settings may influence which schedule is more practical. For instance, emergency departments and intensive care units often rely on 12-hour shifts to ensure continuity of care, while outpatient clinics might operate on 8-hour shifts. Ultimately, the decision depends on individual preference, lifestyle, and professional needs. Many nurses find that alternating between schedules or negotiating flexible shifts when possible offers the best work-life balance. Engaging with peers in nursing communities can provide further insight and shared experiences to guide your choice.

5 8s is easier on the body. But, 4 off days is amazing.
