Description Without Place with a Built-to-Fit Home
If home is not an area of comfort, not property, and is not tied to any land or identity, then what will "home" still mean to our lives? "Description Without Place," an exhibition that invites us to explore the redefinition of the word "home" through Absalon's Cells.
Absalon (also formerly known as Meir Eshel) is a contemporary artist who works on the joints of sculpture, architecture, and existential philosophy; he develops a unique artistic language through white geometric shapes, smooth, vacant, and attenuating all things unnecessary, using his own body as the main gauge for designing space; his concept of looking at "home" is not a space of comfort or possession, but a tool for practicing existence, self-control, and self-awareness; the most recognizable and influential work is the Cells series.
The Cells portfolio is a series of six small architectural structures designed on a 1: 1 scale from Absalon's body, 9-10 square meters of interior space, white geometry, no decoration, no typical home comforts. The interior has only the necessities of standing, walking, sitting, and sleeping. The body of the inhabitants has to adapt to the space. Cells is both a residence, sculpture, and a philosophical proposition. At the same time, Cells was conceptualized in many cities around the world, and Absalon called it a viruses in the city. Buildings that infiltrate the city plan and question the idea. Property, ownership and modern family housing.
In the "Description Without Place" exhibition, for the first time in Asia, the six Cells were shown simultaneously in a life-size copy format, giving the audience the opportunity to experience the idea of a "landless home" most concretely, to question the role of the home in today's world, where the home is made both ideal and commodity at the same time. Under the neoliberal economic and social structure, the home cannot truly accommodate multiple and transformative identities.
The work of the exhibition takes the viewer to experience living as a physical and conscious experience. Into the Cell does not relax the user, but forces us to realize the body, movement, and daily routine at every moment. Eating, sleeping, reading, or moving all become designed gestures, so the home changes from an area of habituation to an area of discipline, withdrawal, and self-reification.

ถ้าใครเสิร์ชคำว่า “ห้องที่ไร้ทางออก / a room without windows” แล้วลังเลว่าจะไปดูดีไหม เราว่าคำนี้มันอธิบายความรู้สึกตอนยืนอยู่ในงาน “Description Without Place” ได้ค่อนข้างตรง—ไม่ใช่ความน่ากลัวแบบหนังระทึกขวัญ แต่เป็นความอึดอัดแบบ “ต้องอยู่กับตัวเอง” มากกว่า สิ่งที่เราชอบคือ ตัวงานไม่ได้บอกให้เราอินด้วยเรื่องเล่าเยอะ ๆ แต่บังคับให้รับรู้ผ่านร่างกายจริง ๆ พอเดินเข้าไปในห้องที่สร้างมาพอดีตัว (สเกล 1:1) จะเริ่มสังเกตทันทีว่าทุกมุมถูกคิดมาเพื่อ “กิจวัตร” อย่างยืน เดิน นั่ง นอน—แต่ไม่ได้เผื่อความฟุ้งเฟ้อของการอยู่อาศัยแบบบ้านทั่วไป ความขาว โล่ง เรียบ ทำให้เราเผลอชะลอการเคลื่อนไหวโดยไม่รู้ตัว เหมือนพื้นที่มันกำหนดท่าทางเราให้เป็นระเบียบขึ้น ความรู้สึกคล้าย “ไร้หน้าต่าง” สำหรับเรา คือความยากในการมองออกไปข้างนอกเพื่อหนีจากความคิดตัวเอง ต่อให้ไม่ได้ปิดทึบจริง ๆ แต่บรรยากาศทำให้เหมือนโลกภายนอกถูกลดความสำคัญลง เหลือแค่คำถามว่า “คุณจะอยู่อย่างไร…ในห้องที่สร้างมาพอดีตัว” (ประโยคนี้เป็นคีย์เวิร์ดที่เจอบนงานและจำติดหัวเลย) มันชวนคิดต่อว่า บ้านของเราในชีวิตจริงให้พื้นที่กับเราแค่ไหน—หรือจริง ๆ แล้วเราต่างหากที่ค่อย ๆ ปรับร่างกายและนิสัยให้พอดีกับบ้านที่อยู่ อีกจุดที่ทำให้เชื่อมกับคำค้น “ห้องที่ไร้ทางออก” คือแนวคิดเรื่องการควบคุมตัวเอง พอพื้นที่บังคับให้ทำได้แค่สิ่งจำเป็น เราจะเริ่มเห็น “ส่วนเกิน” ในชีวิต เช่น ของเยอะ ๆ มุมฟุ้ง ๆ หรือกิจกรรมที่ทำเพื่อกลบความว่าง แล้วก็ย้อนมาถามว่า ถ้าตัดออกหมด เรายังอยู่ได้ไหม อยู่แบบไหนถึงเรียกว่าอยู่ “เป็น” ไม่ใช่แค่อยู่ “รอด” ถ้าใครจะไป แนะนำเผื่อเวลาเดินช้า ๆ และลองยืนเงียบ ๆ ในแต่ละยูนิตสักพัก ไม่ต้องรีบถ่ายรูปอย่างเดียว เพราะอารมณ์ของงานมันเกิดตอนเราเริ่มรู้สึกกับสัดส่วนจริง ๆ มากกว่า ข้อมูลที่เราจดไว้สำหรับไปตาม: - สถานที่: Bangkok Kunsthalle ชั้น 1 (กรุงเทพฯ) - เข้าชม: ฟรี - วันเวลา: พุธ–อาทิตย์ 14.00–20.00 น. - จัดถึง: 31 พฤษภาคม 2569 (31 MAY 2026) - เดินทาง: MRT หัวลำโพง แล้วเดินประมาณ 600 เมตร ถ้าคุณกำลังหาความหมายของ “บ้าน” แบบไม่โรแมนติไซส์เกินไป งานนี้ให้คำตอบไม่ได้แบบสำเร็จรูป แต่ให้พื้นที่ทดลองคิด—และนั่นแหละที่ทำให้ “ห้องที่ไร้ทางออก / a room without windows” กลายเป็นประสบการณ์ที่อยากชวนไปลองด้วยตัวเอง
