ARE WE EATING FAKE FOOD?

Maybe it’s just me lol, or do these veggies look different ?

So I’m always trying new fruits and vegetables, I love trying different cultures fruits and veggies as well. I live in Houston, I feel like the best organic fruits and vegetables come from meat markets, Chinese/asian markets and the African stores too .

So I’ve been to this store before but I strictly use to go for tea . But wanted some fruit one day so I looked at their veggies and fruits lol and when I say everything just looks so different and CLEAN! the veggies even look a different color, everything was way bigger than the fruits and veggies we usually eat . Some of the veggies and fruits I’ve never even heard of lol ..

I instantly was like yeah ok lol we have definitely been eating fake food 🤦🏾‍♀️😂😂 but I felt the same way when I went to Jamaica and Mexico, the food is just different. what y’all think ?

... Read moreDo you ever wonder if the food we eat is truly real? It’s a question that's been on my mind, especially after a recent shopping trip that really opened my eyes. I've heard people talk about how food abroad tastes different, and I experienced it myself in Jamaica and Mexico – the produce just had a vibrant quality I couldn't quite put my finger on. Lately, I've started noticing the same stark difference right here at home, prompting me to question if what we typically find in regular grocery stores is, for lack of a better term, 'fake'. What exactly do I mean by 'fake' food? It's not necessarily about artificial ingredients, but more about produce that lacks vitality, flavor, or might be grown in ways that strip it of its natural goodness. Think about how some fruits and vegetables look perfectly uniform, have a long shelf life, but taste bland or have a strange texture. This often happens due to industrial farming practices emphasizing yield and appearance over nutrition and taste, or varieties bred for transport rather than flavor. My journey to find 'real' food led me to some unexpected places in Houston. I started exploring local ethnic markets – specifically Chinese/Asian markets, African stores, and even some meat markets that surprisingly carry amazing produce. What I discovered there was truly eye-opening. The fruits and vegetables looked different, often bigger and with more vibrant colors. For example, I came across beautiful Chinese Okra (Muop Khia) and fresh, dark green yam leaf and spinach that looked like they were just picked from a garden. It made me realize how much we miss out on when we only stick to conventional grocery stores. So, how can you start your own quest for real food? Here are a few tips I've picked up: Explore Ethnic Markets: Don't be afraid to venture into stores catering to different cultures. They often stock unique, organic produce that's grown differently and tastes fantastic. I found amazing Enoki mushrooms and brightly colored red grapes that had a sweetness I hadn't tasted in years. Visit Farmers' Markets: These are fantastic for finding seasonal, locally grown produce. You can often talk directly to the farmers about their growing practices. The produce here often has natural imperfections, which is a sign it's real and hasn't been overly processed for aesthetic appeal. Look for Vibrant Colors and Firm Textures: Really pay attention to how the produce looks and feels. Are the carrots bright orange and firm? Do the leafy greens have a deep, rich color? These are indicators of freshness and quality. Embrace Variety: Don't stick to the same few vegetables. Ethnic markets introduce you to a world of produce you might never have seen before, expanding your palate and nutrient intake. Trust Your Senses: Fresh produce often has a distinct, earthy smell. If something smells off or has no smell at all, it might not be the freshest. Finding 'real' food isn't just about taste; it's about connecting with what we eat, supporting different farming practices, and nourishing our bodies with truly wholesome ingredients. It’s a journey, and every new discovery feels like a win. What are your thoughts? Have you noticed a difference in food quality lately?
