Fried Cabbage
This is one of our absolute favorite dinners! It’s so quick and simple and SO delicious!
Ingredients
1 head of cabbage, cut into bite size pieces
Kielbasa, sliced
1/2 lb of bacon, cooked and chopped
1/2 onion, sliced
1 1/2 bell pepper, sliced
1 bag of small shrimp
1 cup of white rice, cooked
Seasonings we used, measured from the heart:
Dan-O’s Cheesoning
Old Bay
Cajun Two Step Original
1. Add oil to a large pan, heat and add peppers and onions.
2. Add your sliced kielbasa.
3. In a bowl, add your cabbage, drizzle oil and season with your heart. Toss to coat fully and then add to the pan. Add bacon.
4. Mix all of that together really well and cover. You’ll stir this occasionally during the cooking process.
5. In a separate pan, melt some butter and add in your uncooked shrimp. (If you purchased cooked shrimp, skip this step.) Season the shrimp to your liking and cook until pink and remove from pan to avoid overcooking.
6. Once your cabbage is tender, add the shrimp and mix well.
7. I like to serve this over white rice, but it is just as delicious by itself. I always add yum yum sauce to mine, but again, it is so delicious even without that. Pair it with some garlic knots or bread if your choice. Enjoy!
Fried cabbage is a versatile dish that is surprisingly easy to prepare and can be customized according to your taste preferences. In my experience, using a mix of fresh vegetables like bell peppers and onions alongside kielbasa and shrimp creates a wonderful balance of flavors and textures. One tip I’ve found helpful is to cook the shrimp separately with butter and your choice of seasonings, such as Old Bay or Cajun spices, to ensure they stay tender and flavorful without overcooking. Adding the shrimp at the end after the cabbage is tender gives the dish a fresh seafood touch that complements the smoky kielbasa. For seasoning, measuring from the heart as suggested can make for a personalized experience—don’t be shy about adjusting the amounts based on how spicy or savory you like your meals. Dan-O’s Cheesoning adds a cheesy depth, which blends nicely with the spices. I also recommend trying this over white rice to soak up the hearty juices. For an extra indulgent twist, pairing the dish with garlic knots or crusty bread enhances the meal, and I always enjoy adding a drizzle of yum yum sauce for a creamy, tangy finish. This dish is great for weeknight dinners because it requires minimal prep and comes together in one pan, making cleanup easy. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to incorporate green vegetables like cabbage in a flavorful way whether you’re cooking for family or meal-prepping for the week. Don't hesitate to experiment with other proteins or seasoning blends to make this recipe your own!
