Some nights I listen to the meal suggestions of my toddler - this is one of those meals 💗
I didn’t measure a thing, didn’t overthink it and it turned out pretty good.
What I used
Penne noodles
Ground beef
Meat flavored pasta sauce
Garlic & herb seasoning (I’ll share the 🔗)
Fresh grated mozzarella cheese
Italian seasoning
How I made it (super lazy version)
Cook penne until just tender
Brown ground beef + season with garlic & herbs
Mix noodles, beef and pasta sauce together
Transfer to a baking dish
Top with fresh grated mozzarella cheese + a sprinkle of Italian seasoning
Bake 350 degrees for 20 minutes until melted
That’s it. No crazy fancy steps. Perfect for picky toddlers that finally eat more meat than just chicken.

I’ve tried similar baked pasta dishes before, but this one stands out because it requires minimal measuring and almost no complicated prep, making it perfect for those busy evenings when you just want to throw something in the oven.
One tip I’ve learned from making baked pasta is to cook the noodles just until they’re al dente (firm to the bite but not fully soft). This way, they don’t become mushy after baking in the sauce and cheese. Using penne noodles is a smart choice as they hold the sauce well and bake evenly.
Ground beef adds a hearty protein that is usually a hit with kids, especially when seasoned simply yet effectively with garlic and herb blend. The seasoning used here infuses great flavor without overpowering, making it ideal for picky eaters.
When baking, topping the pasta mixture with fresh grated mozzarella cheese creates a wonderfully melty and golden layer that adds richness to the dish. Sprinkling Italian seasoning on top adds an aromatic layer, bringing out classic Italian flavors.
I also appreciate how adaptable this recipe is. If you want to lighten it up, you can substitute ground beef with ground turkey or even plant-based alternatives. For a veggie boost, adding spinach or mushrooms before baking works great and blends seamlessly with the other ingredients.
This baked spaghetti recipe is also fantastic for batch cooking. You can double the ingredients, bake a larger dish, and save leftovers for quick lunches or dinners throughout the week. It reheats well in the oven or microwave.
In short, this meal is a lifesaver on hectic days and a delightful way to get kids enjoying meat beyond just chicken. Using pantry staples like pasta, a jar of pasta sauce, and spices you likely already have on hand simplifies dinner planning and takes the stress out of cooking dinner from scratch every night.
