Another reason to not have a car in NYC

1/26 Edited to

... Read moreHaving lived in Brooklyn for several years, I've experienced firsthand how owning a car in NYC can be more trouble than it's worth, especially during winter snowstorms. The city enforces strict parking rules, like 'No Standing' zones—such as the one on 420 Court Street—where parking violations can quickly lead to fines or towing. During snowstorms, street clearing becomes a priority, and cars left on the road can obstruct plowing operations, causing vehicles to get buried under heaps of snow. This not only risks your car getting damaged but also limits your ability to move it until the streets are cleared, sometimes for days. Moreover, public transportation in NYC is extensive and often more convenient. The subway and bus systems keep running through most weather conditions, providing residents an efficient alternative. Many New Yorkers also rely on rideshare services or cycling when the weather permits, avoiding the hassle of parking or navigating snowy streets. In my experience, giving up a personal vehicle in NYC—at least during winter months—makes life easier and less stressful. It saves money on parking fees, potential towing costs, and the anxiety of driving in hazardous conditions. If you must have a car, consider parking it in a garage and using public transit when snow is forecasted. This approach can help you avoid many of the headaches associated with car ownership in the city.

COLLEGE IN NYC: THE RULEBOOK
1. Don’t Take an Empty Subway Car 🚊 If you see an empty car on a packed train, there’s a reason—usually a foul smell, broken AC, or worse. Stick with the crowd, even if it’s cramped. 2. Step to the Side on the Sidewalk 🚶‍♀️ NYC sidewalks are like highways: keep moving or pull over to the side
