Tips for hydration while breastfeeding🙌🏼

I am currently 4 weeks postpartum and since I started breastfeeding, I’ve noticed feeling thirsty ALL the time. I quickly learned that this is very common for breastfeeding moms and it makes sense. Staying hydrated is also an essential part of maintaining and building milk supply, so here are some tips that have been helping me stay hydrated:

1. Start by getting a big water cup (I love my 40 oz Stanley)

2. Keep it full and near you at all times: I’ve made the mistake of starting to feed and realizing my water is in the other room and instantly regretting it. Make sure it’s next to you BEFORE you start feeding!

3. Add some flavor with benefits! I like to add cucumber to my water for a few reasons: I’ve noticed when adding cucumber I feel hydrated more quickly and for longer periods of time. Plus cucumber water has many benefits —> excreting toxins, helping with weight loss, supporting digestion/ gut health, and providing antioxidants.

... Read moreStaying hydrated while breastfeeding is crucial not just for your well-being but also for your milk supply. To further enhance hydration, consider incorporating electrolytes into your diet, which can help replenish lost fluids, especially if you’re sweaty or feeling dehydrated. Coconut water, for example, is a natural source of electrolytes that can add variety to your hydration routine. Create a routine where you drink water every time you sit down to nurse—this builds the habit of regular hydration. In addition to cucumber, you can try infusing your water with fruits like lemon, berries, or mint for added flavor and health benefits. These additions can also make drinking water more enjoyable and encourage you to consume more throughout the day. Don't forget about herbal teas or broth, which can provide hydration as well as additional nutrients. Finally, listen to your body—if you're feeling thirsty, it's a sign to drink more fluids. Keep track of your fluid intake with a journal or an app, and aim to drink a glass of water every hour or so. Your body will appreciate these small but impactful changes, helping you feel more energized and prepared for your breastfeeding journey.
