coffee is not a meal
I've often found myself relying on coffee during busy mornings, thinking it might be enough to keep me going until lunch. However, after paying attention to how I felt throughout the day, I realized that coffee alone just doesn't provide the sustenance my body needs. The phrase "coffee is not a meal" resonates strongly because caffeine can mask hunger temporarily, but it won't supply the nutrients essential for energy and focus. One personal experience that stood out was when I noticed what some call "food noise" — feeling restless and distracted because I hadn't eaten enough. It felt like my body was signaling that despite sipping coffee, it was still hungry, a sensation sometimes described as "eating like a bird," where tiny, insufficient snacks aren't enough to satisfy hunger or provide fuel. To combat this, I began to intentionally add more substantial meals or snacks alongside my coffee. Incorporating real food such as whole fruits, nuts, yogurt, or a balanced breakfast allowed me to avoid the mid-morning energy slump. It’s important to recognize that coffee can enhance alertness but should accompany nourishment, not replace it. If you struggle with skipping meals in favor of coffee, try planning easy, wholesome meals in advance or setting reminders to eat. This approach improved my energy, helped maintain focus, and ultimately contributed to better overall wellbeing. Remember, sustainable energy comes from balanced nutrition — coffee is just a companion to that, not a replacement.
