My 5yr needed to bring in her own decorated box for Valentine's Day this year! We were ON IT! I made a faux cake 🎂 box, and she LOVED IT!
Also, peep Big be soooo judgey about me using a butter knife instead of a putty tool for my spackle...leave me aloneeee, I'm happy! I do what I want bahahhaha.
You should totally make a fake cake for yourself because they're so fun!
All these supplies (minus the box, which is from @michaelsstores) were leftover from my fake cake letter I made for my Creative Alphabet series!

After making that adorable faux cake Valentine's box, I realized just how much fun and how versatile DIY fake cakes can be! If you've ever wondered how to make a fake cake for a photoshoot, a unique home decor piece, or just a fun craft, you're in the right place. I'm excited to share more tips and tricks I've picked up along the way. First off, let's talk about the 'icing.' Using lightweight spackle is truly a game-changer! It's affordable, easy to work with, and dries to a perfect hard finish that looks incredibly realistic. You can find it at any hardware store, and a little goes a long way. For application, grab some disposable bags and decorating tips – Dollar Tree often has these, making it super budget-friendly. Piping out your spackle might feel a bit odd at first, but it's just like decorating a real cake! You can create swirls, rosettes, or just a smooth, even coat. Don't worry about being too perfect; sometimes, a slightly rustic look adds to the charm. For the base of your faux cake, don't feel limited. While I used a box, many people find success with styrofoam rounds or even stacking pieces of cardboard. If you're wondering how to make a fake cake with cardboard, simply cut out several circles of the same size and glue them together to get your desired height. Cover the edges with craft paper or a thin layer of spackle for a smooth finish. This is especially great for creating a fake cake prop for events or displays. Once your spackle is piped on, it's time for the fun part: adding faux sprinkles! These little details make all the difference. You can find pre-made craft sprinkles, or get creative with small beads, glitter, or even tiny pieces of colorful paper. Add them while the spackle is still wet so they stick perfectly. After decorating, the most important step is to wait until dry. This can take several hours, or even overnight, depending on how thick your 'icing' is. Patience is key here! Once fully dry, you can gently remove your creation from parchment paper if you used it to protect your work surface. Thinking about an aesthetic fake cake for your space? Consider your color palette! You can tint the spackle with acrylic paint before applying it for pastel hues or vibrant shades. Or, keep it white and add colorful sprinkles and embellishments. For a vintage vibe, try adding pearl beads or dried flowers. If you're crafting a fake birthday cake, consider adding a faux candle or small decorative elements that match the theme. The possibilities are endless for making these cute! These DIY fake cakes aren't just for photoshoots; they make wonderful, long-lasting decor items. I've seen them used beautifully as centerpieces, shelf decor, or even as unique gifts. They’re a fantastic way to add a touch of whimsy to any room without the worry of melting or spoiling. Plus, it's such a satisfying craft project that even beginners can master. So go ahead, gather your supplies, and let your creativity flow – you'll be amazed at what you can create!
