Black Maternal Health Week

4/13 Edited to

... Read moreBlack Maternal Health Week is a vital time to reflect on and promote both justice and joy in the experiences of Black mothers. During this week, the focus extends beyond survival to emphasize equitable, respectful care that supports the well-being and happiness of mothers and babies alike. In my journey learning about midwifery and maternal health, I've found that midwives play a crucial role in creating safe, calm, and supportive environments. This care model is centered on truly hearing and respecting the individual needs of mothers, which is especially important for Black women who historically face disparities in healthcare. Having consistent support and education throughout pregnancy helps build trust and empowers mothers to make informed choices, leading to more positive birth experiences. Books like "Mama, I Want to Be a Midwife," written by Neorah Young and Miquilaue Young and illustrated by Victor Onyenobi, are crucial in planting seeds of purpose and community by representing the real-life stories and aspirations related to birth work. They inspire the next generation to understand the importance of care, representation, and advocacy. Through Black Maternal Health Week, tagging midwives and sharing resources highlights the importance of community care. This collective effort contributes to improved outcomes by ensuring that Black mothers receive the support they deserve. From my own experience exploring birth options, I’ve seen how individualized attention during pregnancy and birth can transform anxiety into joy, and fear into peace. Ultimately, the week reminds us that birth should be a welcoming, joyous event where Black mothers feel safe in their bodies and supported in their choices. It’s about honoring the dignity and humanity of every birthing person, ensuring justice in care, and celebrating the joy that new life brings.

It’s my favorite time of the year! Please never forget that while I am board certified OBGYN, I am first and foremost a black woman, and so Black Maternal Health week is near and dear to my heart. 80% of pregnancy-related maternal deaths are preventable and usually due to a delay in treatment.
