🄄Homemade Coconut Milk

Making coconut milk at home has never been more easy! Literally all you need is coconut 🄄 and water.

I used 3 coconut 🄄 in the video, when picking coconut you want to make sure when you shake it you hear the water inside and there’s no mold around the eyes of the coconut.

I always make sure to get my coconuts cracked in the supermarket because ain’t nobody got time to be wasting money!

The coconut milk & coconut pulp (aka coconut 🄄 ā€œtrashā€) is good to to 3 months!

The coconut pulp is so versatile you can use it to make a number of Jamaican pastries & cakes but it can also be dehydrated to make coconut flour, it can be added to smoothies for extra fiber, it can be added to rice & peas as well. The options are literally endless!

While the original post gives you the basics, I've got a few extra tips and tricks to ensure your homemade coconut milk is not just easy to make, but incredibly creamy and delicious. And trust me, once you make it, you'll be looking for all the ways to use it! First, let's talk about getting the creamiest results. For every mature coconut, I usually start with about 1 ½ to 2 cups of warm water for the first blend. The OCR mentioned adding more water, and that's key! Using warm water (not boiling!) helps extract more fat and flavor from the coconut meat. Blend your coconut meat with this initial amount of water for about 2-3 minutes until it's really pulpy. Then, strain it through a nut milk bag or a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth, squeezing out every last drop of that rich, white liquid. This first press is your thick, creamy coconut milk. But don't toss that pulp yet! This is where you can get even more value. Take the strained pulp and put it back in the blender with another cup or so of fresh warm water. Blend again for another 1-2 minutes. Strain this a second time. This second extraction will yield a thinner coconut milk, often referred to as 'light coconut milk,' which is perfect for cooking or adding to smoothies where you don't need intense richness. I love having both options! You can also combine them or keep them separate depending on your recipe needs. Now, for storing your precious liquid gold. Your fresh homemade coconut milk will last about 3-5 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It might separate into a thick cream layer and a watery layer – this is completely normal! Just stir it back together before use. For longer storage, you can freeze it in ice cube trays or freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months. This is perfect for when you just need a small amount for your coffee or a smoothie. Beyond just drinking it or adding it to curries, I found so many amazing uses for the milk! It's fantastic in vegan oatmeal, chia puddings, or even as a dairy-free creamer in your coffee. I also love using it for making creamy soups, sauces, and even homemade ice cream. The options are truly endless for this versatile ingredient. And for the leftover pulp, which the original post brilliantly calls 'coconut trash,' it's anything but! I often dehydrate mine in a low oven or a dehydrator until completely dry, then blend it into a fine powder to make my own coconut flour. This homemade flour is excellent for gluten-free baking. You can also mix the fresh pulp into energy bites, add it to your morning granola or oatmeal for extra fiber, or even blend it into a smoothie for a thicker, more satisfying texture.
